Hogwarts Legacy 2: confirmed in one sentence, never shown and rumored for 2027. Everything we know
Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed a second Hogwarts Legacy on Aug. 6, 2026, but has shown nothing. Here is what the company has said, what job listings suggest, which rumors held up or fell apart, and where the HBO series and a new owner fit in.

The sequel to the best-selling game of 2023 exists, officially, as one sentence. On Aug. 6, 2026, in a shareholder letter, Warner Bros. Discovery named “the second installment of Hogwarts Legacy” in a games pipeline it expects to lift profits. It came with no title, trailer or platform list. As of Oct. 15, 2026, it is still the only official word on the game.
The short version: Hogwarts Legacy 2 has no release date, no price and no announced platforms. Warner’s games chief expects the real payoff to start in 2027 and 2028, when the company returns to some of its biggest franchises, but has named no game. The rumors point to 2027. And on Oct. 6, the game got a new owner when Paramount Skydance closed its takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery.
One sentence in a shareholder letter
The full line reads: “We expect Games to more meaningfully contribute to segment profitability going forward as our pipeline expands, including the second installment of Hogwarts Legacy.” The same letter said the HBO Max debut of the Harry Potter series should boost demand for Harry Potter experiences and consumer products, but it did not tie the game to the show.
The name had leaked first. In May, a Warner Bros. Games artist listed Hogwarts Legacy 2 on a LinkedIn profile, which a fan account shared on social media. The letter confirmed the sequel in that report, but not the name: Warner has not given the game a title. The official Hogwarts Legacy site, checked Oct. 15, still lists only the first game, with no sequel page.
The best-selling game of 2023
Warner revealed the first Hogwarts Legacy at a PlayStation 5 showcase on Sept. 16, 2020, and launched it on Feb. 10, 2023, almost two and a half years later. Made by Avalanche Software under the Portkey Games label, it is a single-player open-world action RPG set at Hogwarts in the 1800s.

By May 2023, Warner called it the largest release ever for Warner Bros. Games, with more than $1 billion in retail sales, and it went on to be the best-selling game of 2023. It passed 30 million units in October 2024. A Switch 2 version, co-developed with Krome Studios, arrived on June 5, 2025, and by Dec. 17, 2025, the game had sold more than 40 million units.
Years of hints from the top
Warner executives talked up the franchise, then a sequel, long before the letter. In November 2023, CEO David Zaslav said the game “revitalizes the entire Harry Potter franchise” and that Warner wanted its biggest franchises to add more always-on play through live services. In September 2024, CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels told an investor conference: “Obviously, a successor to Hogwarts Legacy is one of the biggest priorities in a couple of years down the road.”
Then came a rough patch. Games president David Haddad left in January 2025. In February, a business news reporter citing people familiar with the plans said Avalanche was making a sequel, new story content and a refreshed edition of the first game. Weeks later, Warner called 2024 “a disappointing year” for games and narrowed its focus to four franchises: Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Mortal Kombat and DC.
On March 27, the same reporter said Warner had canceled the expansion and the refreshed edition, so that report changed, though Warner confirmed the sequel itself in August 2026. By June, the Harry Potter team reported to Yves Lachance under streaming and games chief JB Perrette.
In February 2026, Perrette called 2025 a reset year and said: “The real fruits will start coming in in '27-'28 when we return to some of our biggest franchises.”
The reveal that never came
In April 2026, Avalanche named a new Hogwarts Legacy community manager and posted a job for a video capture artist to record trailer footage. No trailer has followed. In May, a games leaker on social media with a mixed track record said the sequel would be revealed soon at a PlayStation State of Play, which fans read as the June 2 show. That claim is debunked: the game skipped the June 2 State of Play, the June 7 Xbox show and Warner’s Back to Hogwarts showcase on Sept. 1.

The last one stung. Warner used its own Harry Potter showcase to announce a LEGO collection for Switch 2 and showed no sequel.
Single-player, multiplayer or both
Job listings offer the closest look inside, and they pull in two directions. Since March 2025, Avalanche listings have described a new online multiplayer RPG, and a December 2025 listing added matchmaking, lobbies and saved player data on servers. An Aug. 10, 2026, listing repeated the wording. A day later came a listing for “a new open world, action RPG set in the Wizarding World” that asks for Unreal Engine 5 skills and design for multiplayer play. The first game used Unreal Engine 4, according to reports.
Warner Bros. Games listings from November 2025 point the other way, seeking an executive producer for a “high-quality single-player action-adventure RPG” and programmers with single-player story experience. These listing reports are all still holding, none names the game, and Warner has not said whether the sequel is single-player.
One older rumor frames the debate. In February 2025, a games reporter on a video podcast said the sequel is not going to be a live-service game, adding that executives still picture friends playing in Hogwarts together. That rumor is still holding.
The HBO connection
In November 2024, Haddad, then Warner’s games president, said the team had been coordinating some big-picture storytelling elements of the sequel with the HBO Harry Potter series. Warner has not repeated the claim since Haddad left. HBO released its first teaser for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone on March 25, 2026, and set the HBO Max premiere for Dec. 25, 2026, earlier than the 2027 window it had given.

When, where and for how much
The date rumors cluster around 2027. In February 2026, a Harry Potter fan news account on social media, citing its own sources, said the game would launch soon after the first season of the HBO series, between January and April 2027. In June, a games journalist on a podcast said the sequel is well into production and should come out in 2027 or 2028. Both rumors are still holding, and the second fits Perrette’s window, though Warner has named no year.
The setting is pure rumor. Unverified social media posts since May claim the sequel opens up London, Diagon Alley and Privet Drive, and later posts added a flying car for travel from London to Hogwarts. That rumor is still holding, since Warner has not shown the game or named a setting. Price and platforms are just as open. The first game launched at $69.99 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S and $59.99 on PC, and no credible leak ties the sequel to PlayStation 6.
A new owner
After the Oct. 6 takeover, the combined company is called Skydance, and it owns Warner Bros. Games and Avalanche Software. The same day, Skydance told staff that Tony Driscoll, head of Paramount Games Studio since June, is now president of games and experiences, a unit that takes in both. No new game was named.

What to watch next
The next date is Oct. 16, when the LEGO Harry Potter Collection goes on sale for Switch 2. The bigger one is Dec. 25, when the HBO series premieres on HBO Max. If the fan rumor is right, the game follows the show’s first season, between January and April 2027. Skydance has not set its next earnings date. We update this story as soon as Skydance shows the game, names it or gives it a date.
