Galaxy Z TriFold 2: the first one is sold out, and the sequel is reported for 2027. Everything we know

Samsung's phone that folds twice is sold out in its US store, and Samsung hasn't announced a second one. Here is what Samsung has said, what reports and leaks claim about the date, price, hinge and S Pen, and what to watch on Oct. 28.

The Galaxy Z TriFold was Samsung’s first phone that folds twice, opening out like a road map into a 10-inch screen. It reached the US on Jan. 30, 2026, at $2,899, and today Samsung’s US store says: “The limited-run Galaxy Z TriFold is now completely sold out.” There is no TriFold 2 listing to take its place.

Samsung has not announced a Galaxy Z TriFold 2, and there is no date, no price and no spec sheet. In February the chief operating officer of its mobile business said the company had “not made a decision yet” on a new one. Since then a Korean IT daily has reported that early development has started for a 2027 launch, and a Korean leaker with a solid track record on Samsung foldables describes a thinner, lighter phone on an all-new hinge. Samsung has commented on none of it, and every TriFold 2 report and leak here is still holding, unconfirmed and not knocked down.

The phone that folds twice

Samsung announced the TriFold on Dec. 1, 2025. It folds inward twice, on two differently sized hinges, to protect the main screen. Fully open, the 10-inch panel works like three 6.5-inch phones side by side, Samsung says. Closed, it is a phone with a 6.5-inch cover screen.

The TriFold is 3.9 mm at its thinnest unfolded and 12.9 mm folded, and weighs 309 g. It runs the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy, and its 5,600 mAh battery, which Samsung calls the biggest it has put in a foldable, is split into three cells, one in each panel. It was also the first phone with standalone Samsung DeX. Samsung said the main display passed a 200,000-cycle folding test, about 100 folds a day for five years.

Korea got it first, on Dec. 12, at KRW 3,590,400. Samsung’s Korea sales head, Alex Lim, called pricing a “difficult decision” as memory and part costs rose, and added: “I believe the foldable market will continue to grow.”

A short run and a quiet exit

On Dec. 23 a Korean business news site, citing industry sources, reported that Samsung loses money on every TriFold it sells, because building one costs more than its Korean price. Samsung has not commented, and the report is still holding.

US sales began Jan. 30 at Samsung’s online store and Samsung Experience Stores. On March 16, a Korean IT daily reported that Samsung would sell its last batch in Korea the next day, and a Samsung spokesperson confirmed on March 17 that sales would end in Korea first, then in the US once the remaining stock was gone. Samsung gave no reason. Korean reports pointed to high production costs and rising memory prices.

Samsung never gave a production figure. A leaker in Korea put the initial run at 41,000 units, and a Taiwanese supply chain publication said about 30,000 shipped.

“We have not made a decision yet”

Samsung’s most recent word on a sequel is from February. Won-Joon Choi, chief operating officer of Samsung’s mobile business, said in an on-record interview on Feb. 26: “Now we wonder, should we develop a new one? We have not made a decision yet.”

Nothing Samsung has published since has settled it. Its first-quarter report on April 29 talked of “strengthening the product development of foldables” in the second half, without a word about a tri-fold. At Galaxy Unpacked on July 22 the stage belonged to the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Fold8 and Flip8, and the second-quarter report a week later tied second-half phone growth to the Galaxy Z8 and S26 series. Again, no tri-fold.

2027, or sooner?

The leaks are more confident, and most come from the Korean leaker with the solid record on foldables. On March 17, the day Samsung confirmed the end of TriFold sales, the leaker wrote that a second-generation TriFold was in development and could launch in mid-2027, a year the leaker repeated in July, September and October.

A Korean IT daily, citing industry sources, backed up the year on July 26. Samsung had shared the next TriFold project with suppliers and started early development, the daily reported, for a 2027 launch as one of four foldables. The same report said Samsung is expected to build more TriFold 2 units than the first model, though nothing is decided. On Aug. 17 the daily said a second wide Fold project brings Samsung’s 2027 foldables to five, the TriFold 2 still among them.

There has been one wobble. On July 12 the Korean leaker, citing suppliers, said rising costs made it likely the TriFold 2 would slip later than Samsung first planned. Two months later the same leaker pointed the other way.

A reply to Apple?

On Sept. 9, during Apple’s iPhone Duo launch, Samsung’s US mobile account posted on X: “Making us wait? Fine. We’ll be over here, folding 3 ways.” The post named no phone and no date. Four days later the Korean leaker said Samsung is keeping its 2027 plan but weighing an earlier launch of the TriFold 2 and a slidable phone, as a response to one unnamed company. Reports read that company as Apple. No date came with the claim, and it pulls against the leaker’s own July warning.

A codename and a crowded lineup

On July 31 a Dutch Samsung news site with a strong track record on codenames listed Samsung’s 2027 foldables as B9, H9, Q9A, Q9B and Z9, and said Q9B appears to be the TriFold 2, after the first model’s Q7M. Which phone gets Q9A and which gets Q9B is not certain.

The reported count keeps climbing. On Oct. 14 a leaker on X who posts Samsung news described six 2027 Galaxy Z models, including a Galaxy Z Slide and a Z Fold9 Pro, with gains in battery, thickness and weight across the board. “Z TriFold2 will kick things off,” the post said. It gave no month.

Thinner, lighter and an S Pen?

Folded, the first TriFold is 12.9 mm thick. The Korean leaker said in March the TriFold 2 would be thinner and lighter, only slightly thicker than a Galaxy Z Fold7 when folded. Samsung lists the Fold7 at 8.9 mm.

The hinge is where the leaks get specific. In April the leaker, citing suppliers, said Samsung is building an all-new one for the TriFold 2, with a new structure and materials, and in September called it thinner, lighter and more durable. The Korean IT daily reported in July that specs are not final but the screen stays about the first model’s 10 inches. No credible leak gives the chip, battery capacity or cameras.

Then there is the pen. Samsung’s US store says the first TriFold does not support S Pen, but a Samsung patent filing, shared by a leaker on social media on May 11, shows an S Pen stored inside a tri-fold’s hinge area, held by magnets and charged while docked. The patent names no product.

What it might cost

Samsung has given no price. The Korean leaker said in September that Samsung aims to price the TriFold 2 about the same as the first model, despite rising part costs. The first one cost $2,899 in the US. Samsung’s newest foldables, on sale since Aug. 7, launched for less: the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, with an 8-inch screen, from $2,099.99, the Fold8 from $1,899.99 and the Flip8 from $1,199.99.
