Red Dead Redemption 3: no trailer, no date, and GTA VI comes first. Everything we know

Rockstar has not announced a third Red Dead. Here is what Rockstar and Take-Two have said and filed, how Red Dead Redemption 2 keeps selling, how the leaks about the name and new-console versions have fared, and what to watch on Nov. 9.

Red Dead Redemption 3 is not real yet, at least not officially. As of Oct. 17, 2026, neither Rockstar Games nor its parent company, Take-Two Interactive, has announced a third Red Dead, and Take-Two’s Aug. 7 quarterly report names one Rockstar game for the year to March 2027: GTA VI, on Nov. 19, 2026.

Yet Red Dead Redemption 2 has sold-in over 87 million units, and on Oct. 14 Rockstar said its next game, still unnamed, will not take as long as GTA VI. The short version: no date, no price, no platforms, and every “Red Dead Redemption 3 trailer” online is fan-made. The next scheduled chance for news is Take-Two’s earnings report on Nov. 9.

Two games, about eight and a half years apart

Red Dead Redemption arrived on PS3 and Xbox 360 in North America on May 18, 2010, set in 1911 in the American West and Mexico. Rockstar teased the sequel on Oct. 16, 2016, with a red version of its logo, then a sunset image of seven riders. That came two years before launch: Red Dead Redemption 2 reached PS4 and Xbox One on Oct. 26, 2018, at $59.99, set in 1899, 12 years before the first game. PC followed on Nov. 5, 2019.

Rockstar also alternates its biggest series: GTA V in 2013, Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018, GTA VI in 2026. GTA VI’s first trailer, on Dec. 4, 2023, came almost three years before its release date. If Rockstar follows its own pattern, a new Red Dead would be shown long before it ships.

A series Take-Two wants to rest

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said in November 2021 that the company would “like every franchise to be James Bond,” adding: “I think Red Dead is one of them.” Such series need rest between releases, Zelnick said, so each one feels like a special event. Take-Two’s August report says Rockstar makes “a limited number of titles” it can build sequels for.

In April 2026, asked about Rockstar’s older series, Zelnick said: “Broadly, we’re looking at doing something in the future with all of our intellectual property.” A month later Zelnick said new technology may let Take-Two “compress some development timelines,” without naming a game.

GTA VI comes first

Rockstar has said where its people went. In July 2022 it scaled back Red Dead Online updates as more of its staff moved to the next Grand Theft Auto. That game then slipped from fall 2025 to May 26, 2026, and on Nov. 6, 2025, to Nov. 19, 2026, the date Rockstar’s Oct. 15 launch trailer kept.

“The engine, the tools and the team we’ve built during this project will allow us to do things more quickly,” Phil Hooker, one of Rockstar’s heads of development, said on Oct. 14. Aaron Garbut, also a head of development, said Rockstar “foundationally changed” a lot on GTA VI, “but now it’s done, and we’re not going to rip it apart.”

Still selling eight years later

The case for a sequel rests mostly on sales. Take-Two says the year to March 2026 was Red Dead Redemption 2’s best year of unit sales since its launch year. Its August presentation puts the whole series at nearly 116 million units sold-in and calls Red Dead Redemption 2 the No. 3 best-selling game in the US since 2018. Steam still lists it at $59.99, on sale today at $14.99.

Online is murkier. Stolen Rockstar data, posted by a hacker group in April 2026, puts Red Dead Online at about $507,000 a week from June 2024 to April 2026. Rockstar confirmed a breach but not the figures, so the report is still holding.

The “RDR3” on a programmer’s profile

The name has surfaced once, and it may not mean much. On Nov. 23, 2021, a Rockstar programmer’s professional profile mentioned leading a vehicle AI team “through development of RDR3 and other projects.” That line has since changed: within days it was edited to say RDR2. Red Dead Redemption 2 is the third Red Dead game, counting Red Dead Revolver, so RDR3 may have been an internal name for it. Fan readings of it as a hint at cars and a 1910s or 1920s setting are guesses.

The rest is thinner. On Sept. 3, 2023, a movie leaker on X with no games track record said Red Dead Redemption 3 is “officially in the works,” with no source. Later reports of early concept work cite unnamed insiders. That rumor is still holding.

The upgrade fans keep waiting for

Many Red Dead rumors are not about a sequel at all. Red Dead Redemption 2 still has no native PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version. In July 2022 a Rockstar insider with a strong track record said on a fan forum that Rockstar had shelved such versions, along with a remaster of the first game. That claim has changed: the first game did come back. In 2025 a European games outlet citing sources close to Rockstar, and then an industry insider with a strong track record, said the versions could arrive that year, with one for Switch 2. Both claims were contradicted when 2025 ended without them.

The insider has not let go. In October 2025 the versions “exist,” the insider said, and on Feb. 5, 2026: “As far as I know, RDR2 is this year.” On June 24 the same insider suggested Rockstar may be holding back finished versions, since “plans changed once GTA6 maintained its release for Nov.” In September 2025 a games podcaster on X with a mixed track record said eight developers described working on a Switch 2 version, then in January 2026 guessed late 2027 for a release and called that personal speculation. Both claims are still holding.

The first game’s second life

While Red Dead Redemption 2 waits, the 2010 game keeps coming back. Red Dead Redemption reached PS4 and Switch on Aug. 17, 2023, and PC on Oct. 29, 2024, at $49.99, 14 years after its console launch. A US ratings board (ESRB) listing showed versions for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2 before Rockstar announced them on Nov. 13, 2025. They arrived on Dec. 2, 2025, along with a version for phones through Netflix. The Switch 2 Edition lists at $49.99 in the Nintendo eShop, on sale today at $24.99.

Rockstar is building around the edges, too. The team behind FiveM and RedM, roleplay servers for GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, joined Rockstar in August 2023. Job listings reported in April 2026 include a role tracking engagement and revenue on both, and a Rockstar Games Australia programmer post covering “one or more classic game technology areas.” None mentions a new Red Dead.

Who expects a third game

Two outside voices lean yes. On Oct. 31, 2025, Rockstar’s former co-founder and lead writer, who left in 2020, said someone else continuing Red Dead “will probably happen too,” though the first two games were “a cohesive two-game arc.” No inside information came with it. And on Oct. 15, 2026, a Wall Street bank’s analyst note said a new Red Dead in 2027 or 2028 “may not be unreasonable” if GTA VI cost less than $1.5 billion to make, the bank’s own estimate rather than a leak. Both views are still holding.

What to watch next

Take-Two reports earnings on Nov. 9, 2026, after the market closes, 10 days before GTA VI. Take-Two moved GTA VI’s date on its Nov. 6, 2025, report day, but an earnings report is no promise of Red Dead news. GTA VI follows on Nov. 19. The industry insider’s “RDR2 is this year” call runs out Dec. 31. We update this story as soon as Rockstar or Take-Two says anything official on Red Dead.
