Rumor tracker Not announcedRelease date
Switch 3: no name, no date and a Switch 2 that Nintendo says is just beginning. Everything we know
Nintendo has not announced a Switch 3. Here is what its executives say about the Switch 2's long run, what the Switch's eight-year cycle suggests, the chip rumor and OLED reports, and why Nov. 5 is the next date to watch.

There is no Switch 3, at least not one Nintendo will talk about. The company has not announced a successor to the Switch 2, which launched on June 5, 2025, and has given the next machine no name, no date, no price and no specs. The Switch 3 renders and trailers online are fan-made. What Nintendo does have is a console in its second year, and executives who talk about its long run, not its end.
The rumor file is thin: an analyst’s note about an Intel chip, a two-screen patent and reports that Nintendo is weighing a Switch 2 with an OLED screen. The next date Nintendo has set is its six-month results on Nov. 5, 2026.
What Nintendo’s executives say
Ask Nintendo about the end of the Switch 2 and the answer has not moved. At its shareholders meeting in June 2025, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa said “it is not yet the time to discuss” the console’s life cycle, and that Nintendo aims for people to enjoy it “for as long as possible.”
In February 2026 Furukawa called the Switch 2’s second and third years “very important.” On results day in May, according to Japanese media, Furukawa said the Switch grew over eight years and Nintendo wants the Switch 2 to grow over a similarly long span. On Sept. 17, at an industry summit, Nintendo of America President Devon Pritchard was blunter. “We’re at the beginning of Nintendo Switch 2,” Pritchard said, adding: “This is just beginning.”
Shareholders did not even ask about a successor this year. At Nintendo’s meeting on June 26, none of the 19 questions was about one.
The eight-year clock
The Wii U launched in the US on Nov. 18, 2012. The original Switch followed on March 3, 2017, at $299.99, about four years and three months later. Then came the long one: about eight years and three months before the Switch 2 arrived.

Run the same gap again and a successor would land around 2033. That is arithmetic from one past cycle, not a plan from Nintendo, and a shorter or longer cycle is just as possible. The Switch had reached 156.59 million units by June 30, 2026, and Nintendo still sells it. In November 2025 Nintendo said 84% of Switch 2 players came from the Switch.
How Nintendo handed off last time
Last time, Nintendo gave plenty of notice. On May 7, 2024, Furukawa said Nintendo would announce the Switch’s successor within the fiscal year ending in March 2025, adding that a successor “takes years of preparation.” The reveal came on Jan. 16, 2025. A Nintendo Direct on April 2 set the launch for June 5 at $449.99 in the US. From first word to store shelves took about 13 months.
The work began much earlier. Furukawa said the Switch 2 became an official project around 2019, and that Nintendo “constantly” does research on new hardware.
Nvidia, Intel and the chip
Every Switch so far has run on Nvidia silicon. The original used a custom Tegra chip. Nvidia says the Switch 2 runs on a custom Nvidia processor with RT and Tensor cores and 10 times the graphics performance of the Switch. In November 2016 Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the Nintendo partnership “will likely last two decades.”

The one rumor about the Switch 3’s insides points elsewhere. On April 8, 2025, a Wall Street chip analyst wrote in an investor note, “We believe” Intel “has won the GPU gaming socket,” meaning the graphics chip deal, for the “Nintendo Switch 3” on Intel’s 18A process. Some coverage read it as an Nvidia design built by Intel. Nintendo, Intel and Nvidia have not commented. The rumor is still holding, which means only that nothing has confirmed or contradicted it.
Will your games come along?
Nintendo has not said whether a Switch 3 would play Switch 2 games, a question it answered early last time. In November 2024, before the Switch 2 was revealed, Nintendo said Switch games would play on the successor and Nintendo Switch Online would carry over, and that Nintendo Account keeps its relationship with players “across platform generations.”
Nintendo’s developers later said “Switch 2 doesn’t contain any Switch hardware.” The console runs Switch games with a method “somewhere in between a software emulator and hardware compatibility,” and Nintendo says it plays compatible Switch games, though some may not run or fully work. That broke with the past: the original Switch did not play Wii U or 3DS games.
A patent with two screens
The most imaginative item in the file is a drawing. A Nintendo patent application published by WIPO on Oct. 26, 2023, shows a device made of two halves, each with its own screen, that join in two ways and split apart for two players. Fans read it as a hint at future hardware. A US version was updated on Aug. 14, 2025, with new drawings. The Switch 2 launched with one screen, and Nintendo has announced no two-screen device or accessory. The report is still holding, but many patents never become products.

Switch 2 revisions, real and rumored
On July 13, 2026, a Korean tech newspaper citing three industry sources said Nintendo is weighing a Switch 2 OLED model with a 1920x1080 OLED screen, and that Samsung Display will try to supply it. Nintendo has not decided, the sources said, because OLED costs more than LCD. If it goes ahead, one source said, product development could start at the end of 2026. In May 2025 a business news agency had reported that Samsung pushed for OLED in a Switch 2 refresh. Both reports are still holding, and Nintendo has not commented.
One change is real, and it began as a report. In March 2026 a Japanese business newspaper said Nintendo would make the Switch 2 battery easy for owners to replace in Europe, to meet EU rules. Nintendo confirmed it in June. On Oct. 8, 2026, the FCC certified a revised Switch 2, model BEE-001(-01), plus four revised controllers, and Nintendo’s European support guide says that model has a user-replaceable battery. The same guide settled “OSM,” a code a fan found on Nintendo’s account website in January and read as a new model: Nintendo ties it to the battery version, not a new design. A day before the console filing, the FCC certified an unannounced Nintendo “NFC Reader Writer,” model OGO-011: a reader, not a console. No credible leak points to a Switch 2 Pro.
Prices are going up, not down
The Switch 2 started fast. It sold more than 3.5 million units in four days, Nintendo’s fastest-selling system ever, then 19.86 million in its first fiscal year, and reached 23.68 million by June 30, 2026. In August Nintendo kept its 16.5 million forecast for the year to March 2027, which factors in about JPY 100 billion in higher part and tariff costs.
Shoppers felt those costs. In February Furukawa said memory prices were rising “at a pace that exceeds our expectations,” and in May Nintendo set the US price at $499.99 from Sept. 1, up from $449.99. Nintendo’s US store lists it at that price today, with no Switch 3. For anyone deciding whether to buy now or wait, nothing official suggests a successor soon.
What to watch next
Start with the Nov. 5 results, which bring fresh Switch 2 sales figures and a chance for Nintendo to talk about plans. Before that, on Oct. 29, the Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition of the Switch 2 arrives. Beyond the calendar, keep an eye on the FCC: the battery-swap Switch 2 is Nintendo’s newest console filing, and nothing newer has shown up. We update this story as soon as Nintendo says anything about a Switch 3.

Switch 3 FAQ
When will the Switch 3 come out?
Nintendo hasn’t said, and no credible leak gives a date. The Switch lasted about eight years and three months before the Switch 2 arrived, and the same gap would put a successor around 2033. That’s arithmetic, not a plan from Nintendo.
Is the Switch 3 real?
Not yet. Nintendo hasn’t announced a Switch 3 or a name for its next console, though it says it always does research on new hardware. Switch 3 renders and trailers online are fan-made.
How long will the Switch 2 last?
Nintendo wants the Switch 2 to grow over a long span, as the original Switch did over more than eight years. In September 2026 the president of Nintendo of America said “We’re at the beginning of Nintendo Switch 2.” Nintendo has given no end date.
Will the Switch 3 play Switch 2 games?
Nintendo hasn’t said. The Switch 2 plays most Switch games, and Nintendo says Nintendo Account keeps players' history across platform generations.
How much will the Switch 3 cost?
There is no price from Nintendo or a credible leak. The Switch launched at $299.99 and the Switch 2 at $449.99, which rose to $499.99 in the US on Sept. 1, 2026, as memory and part costs climbed.
Should I buy a Switch 2 now or wait for the Switch 3?
Nothing suggests a successor soon. The Switch 2 is in its second year, Nintendo plans to grow it over a long span and keeps adding games and editions. The price also went up in September 2026, not down.
What is the difference between a Switch 3 and a Switch 2 Lite?
A Switch 3 would be a new generation, while a Lite would be a cheaper version of the Switch 2. Nintendo has announced neither. The only refresh report is a Korean tech newspaper’s claim that Nintendo is weighing a Switch 2 OLED model.
Will Nvidia make the Switch 3 chip?

Is a Switch 2 Pro coming?
No credible leak points to a more powerful Switch 2. The only hardware revision Nintendo has announced is a European Switch 2 with a user-replaceable battery, and a report says an OLED model is being weighed.
When could Nintendo say more?
Nintendo’s next results come on Nov. 5, 2026, with new Switch 2 sales figures. Nintendo first said a Switch successor was coming about 13 months before the Switch 2 launched.
