The game that started CD Projekt Red’s RPG series is being rebuilt, but it still has no date. Here’s what the studio has said about The Witcher remake and where it stands next to The Witcher 4.

When does The Witcher remake come out?

CD Projekt hasn’t announced a date, a year or a release window. As of Oct. 17, 2026, there’s no platform list, price, trailer or store page, four years after the reveal. The remake isn’t part of the company’s plan through 2028, which has one large Witcher release a year: The Witcher 3 Remastered came out on Sept. 29, 2026, the Songs of the Past expansion follows in 2027, and The Witcher 4 is planned for 2028.

What CD Projekt has said about it

The remake first appeared as Canis Majoris in CD Projekt’s strategy update on Oct. 4, 2022, described as a full-fledged production made by an external studio under the supervision of developers who’d worked on The Witcher games. On Oct. 26, 2022, the 15th anniversary of the first game, CD Projekt Red announced it by name as a modern reimagining of the 2007 original.

It’s built from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5, with the toolset CD Projekt Red is creating for the new Witcher saga. Fool’s Theory, a studio whose team includes veterans of The Witcher 2 and The Witcher 3, is developing it, and CD Projekt Red provides full creative supervision. Head of studio Adam Badowski said at the reveal, “The Witcher is where it all started for us.”

Where it fits next to The Witcher 4

The two projects share a studio partner and an engine. Fool’s Theory also co-develops Songs of the Past with CD Projekt Red, and on Sept. 2, 2026, CD Projekt said 170 of the expansion’s 220 developers work at Fool’s Theory. The Witcher 4, also built in Unreal Engine 5, is the first game of the new saga, with Ciri as the lead.

CD Projekt’s reports for 2026 don’t give an update on the remake. Its first-half report names The Witcher 4, Cyberpunk 2, Songs of the Past and Sirius as the main games in advanced development, and the company hasn’t announced a pause or a cancellation. Fool’s Theory still lists the remake on its website as a project in the works.

Will it be open world, and on which platforms?

CD Projekt hasn’t said. The 2022 announcement doesn’t describe the remake’s structure, and the 2007 original is split into a prologue, five chapters and an epilogue. CD Projekt also hasn’t named platforms, so there’s no confirmation for PS5, Xbox Series X and S, Switch 2 or PC. The original came out on PC only.

How to play the original now

On Steam, The Witcher: Enhanced Edition Director’s Cut costs $9.99, for Windows and Mac. You play Geralt of Rivia, a professional monster hunter, in the first game of a series that CD Projekt says has sold more than 90 million copies.
