The Witcher 4 release date: planned for 2028, with Ciri as the lead

The Witcher 4 is planned for 2028, but CD Projekt Red hasn’t named a release day. The studio announced the 2028 window in August 2026 and hasn’t opened pre-orders. The game is coming to PC, PlayStation and Xbox, and Ciri is the new lead.

When does The Witcher 4 come out?

CD Projekt Red’s target is 2028. Joint CEO Michał Nowakowski revealed the window in a video address on Aug. 24, 2026, ahead of gamescom, and the company repeated it with its first-half results on Sept. 2. It hasn’t given a month or a day.

The 2028 date is the last step in a plan for one large Witcher release a year. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered came out on Sept. 29, 2026, and Songs of the Past, the third full expansion for The Witcher 3, follows in 2027. On the earnings call, Nowakowski called The Witcher 4 the studio’s “biggest, boldest and most ambitious project in our history so far.”

Platforms: PC, PlayStation and Xbox

When it showed the tech demo in June 2025, CD Projekt Red said it was working with Epic Games to power The Witcher 4 on PC, PlayStation and Xbox. The demo ran on a PS5, and the studio said the same technology would be supported on every platform the game launches on.

In September 2026, Nowakowski said the team’s current build already runs on all target platforms, such as PC, PlayStation and Xbox. He added that this doesn’t mean the full game with all its content is done. CD Projekt Red hasn’t said which console generations it’s targeting, and it hasn’t announced a Switch 2 version.

Price and pre-orders

CD Projekt Red hasn’t announced a price, editions or pre-orders for The Witcher 4.

Ciri and a new Witcher saga

The Witcher 4 was revealed at The Game Awards 2024 in Los Angeles, with a nearly six-minute cinematic trailer. CD Projekt Red, which had called the project Polaris until then, said it’s the first game in a new Witcher saga, with Ciri, Geralt of Rivia’s adopted daughter, as the protagonist. Game director Sebastian Kalemba said the studio wants to explore what it means to truly become a witcher.

In the trailer, Ciri takes on a witcher contract in a remote village that a monster has terrorized for generations, demanding human sacrifices. She uses new tools, including a chain and more advanced magic. CD Projekt Red made the trailer with Platige Image in a custom build of Unreal Engine 5, using assets and models from the game, and pre-rendered it on a then-unannounced Nvidia GeForce RTX graphics card.

The Unreal Engine 5 tech demo

On June 3, 2025, at Unreal Fest Orlando, CD Projekt Red and Epic Games showed a tech demo running at 60 fps on a PS5. It follows Ciri and her horse Kelpie through the mountains and forests of Kovir, a region appearing in a Witcher video game for the first time, to the port town of Valdrest. CD Projekt Red labels the footage a technical presentation, not actual gameplay.

CD Projekt Red and Epic Games have worked together on Unreal Engine 5 since 2022. The tools from the demo are being released to all Unreal Engine developers, starting with Unreal Engine 5.6.

Development: full production with 519 developers

As of July 31, 2026, 519 of CD Projekt Red’s 1,045 developers were working on The Witcher 4, making it the studio’s largest team. Nowakowski says the game is in full production, which means the team knows what kind of game it’s making and is filling it with content. The studio says its games usually take between three and six years to make.

The road to 2028: Remastered and Songs of the Past

Two Witcher 3 releases come first. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered launched on Sept. 29, 2026, as a free upgrade that includes the Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions, on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and, natively, Switch 2. Songs of the Past follows in 2027 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a scope comparable to Blood and Wine. Nowakowski says it gives Geralt one more adventure before Ciri takes over as the main protagonist in The Witcher 4.
