KOTOR remake release date: Saber says it's still in development, five years after the reveal
The Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake doesn't have a release date. Aspyr, Lucasfilm Games and Sony revealed it at the PlayStation Showcase on Sept. 9, 2021, as a console exclusive on PS5 at launch, and as of Oct. 16, 2026, nobody has named a window, a price or shown new footage. The project is now with Saber Interactive, whose chief creative officer, Tim Willits, said in March 2026 that it's still in development. It hasn't been cancelled, but the only trailer is still the short teaser from 2021.

The KOTOR remake is still alive, as far as Saber is concerned, but it still has no date. Five years after its reveal, there’s one teaser and a handful of words from the studio. Here’s what’s official.
When is the KOTOR remake coming out?
Nobody has said. There’s no release date, no window and no price, and there’s been no gameplay footage since the remake was revealed.
The latest official word came in March 2026, when Tim Willits, chief creative officer at Saber Interactive, gave a short update on the project’s status: “Yes, it is still in development.” Willits didn’t share a window, platforms or any other details.
What was announced in 2021
The remake was revealed at the PlayStation Showcase on Sept. 9, 2021, with a cinematic teaser. In the announcement on the PlayStation Blog, Aspyr said it was working with Lucasfilm Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment to rebuild Knights of the Old Republic from the ground up with modern tech, features and visuals, while keeping the story and characters intact. The remake was announced as a console exclusive on PS5 at launch.

The original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, made by BioWare, came out in 2003 and is set more than 4,000 years before the original Star Wars trilogy. Aspyr said at the reveal that the team included some members of the original development team and that the project was still early in development.
Saber’s turn, and what it has said
The remake later moved from Aspyr to Saber Interactive, which has handled it since. Saber has said very little in public. Willits’s comment in March 2026 is its clearest public confirmation that the project is still going.
Reports in 2025 said a Saber studio, Mad Head Games, had taken over development. Saber hasn’t confirmed which of its teams is working on the game, and it hasn’t said whether the PS5 exclusivity announced in 2021 still stands.
How to play Knights of the Old Republic now
The original games are easy to find. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords cost $9.99 each on Steam, and Aspyr has brought both to Switch and mobile.

For a newer Star Wars story game, there’s Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi series, and Lucasfilm Games' newer titles include Star Wars Zero Company.
Rumors and what could come next
In July 2026, a remark attributed to a Saber executive circulated online, listing the KOTOR remake as hopefully part of a 2028 lineup. Saber hasn’t confirmed that or any other window, so treat it as unverified.
There’s no event where Saber or Lucasfilm Games has promised news. The biggest showcase left this year is The Game Awards on Dec. 10, covered on our Game Awards 2026 page. For RPGs that already have dates, see our list of upcoming games in 2027.
This page is updated as soon as Saber Interactive or Lucasfilm Games announces a release date, platforms or new footage for the KOTOR remake.
