Rollable phone release date: none is on sale yet, and Samsung is the company to watch
There's no rollable phone release date yet: as of Oct. 18, 2026, no company sells a phone whose screen rolls out of its body. Samsung Display, the panel maker inside Samsung, has shown a screen that rolls up into a tube about an inch across, and it already makes the rollable panel in a Lenovo laptop. A Korean business newspaper reported in June 2026 that Samsung wants its first rollable phone on sale in the first half of 2028. Samsung hasn't announced one. LG teased a rollable phone in 2021, then closed its phone business, and Motorola and OPPO have shown only concepts.

Phones that roll out to a bigger screen have been “almost here” since 2020. None has reached a store yet. Here’s who has shown one, what you can buy instead and when a real one could arrive.
Is there a rollable phone release date?
No. As of Oct. 18, 2026, no company sells a phone whose screen rolls out of its body, and none has announced one with a date. Every rollable phone you’ve seen so far, from LG, Motorola, OPPO and Samsung’s panel maker, has been a teaser, a concept or a trade show demo.
The one date in circulation comes from a report, not a company. In June 2026 a Korean business newspaper said Samsung Display wants the first commercial rollable Galaxy phone out in the first half of 2028, possibly next to the Galaxy S28 phones. It described a screen of about 10 inches in a 16:9 shape, said the phone may be called Galaxy Z Slide and mentioned a second model in 2030. Samsung hasn’t confirmed any of it.
The name came up again on Oct. 14, 2026, when a leaker on X who posts Samsung news listed a Galaxy Z Slide among six Galaxy Z models for 2027, without a month. Samsung hasn’t confirmed that either. Our Galaxy Z TriFold 2 tracker follows the rest of that list.
What a rollable phone is
A foldable phone, like the iPhone Duo or Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8, bends its screen along a hinge. A rollable keeps part of the screen wrapped around a thin shaft inside the body. Press a button or swipe, and motors slide the panel out, so the phone grows taller or wider. Close it, and the extra screen winds back in.
That design has two draws. There’s no fold line, the crease foldable owners notice over time, and the screen can stop at more than one size instead of just open or closed. The catch is the shaft. Samsung Display says the hard part is keeping its diameter small: a screen rolled as thick as a roll of toilet paper would be too bulky to carry.
The screen that rolls into a tube
The phone-free version already exists. At SID Display Week in Los Angeles in May 2023, Samsung Display showed Rollable Flex, a 12.4-inch OLED that wraps around a cylinder like a scroll. It stretches from 49 mm to 254.4 mm, more than five times its rolled-up length, while a typical foldable only doubles or triples in size. Rolled up, Samsung Display said, it’s about 26 mm across, close to an inch.
It came back at MWC 2024 in Barcelona, wound more than twice around a shaft with a 15 mm radius. At CES 2025 in Las Vegas, Samsung Display added two sliding screens: Slidable Flex Vertical, which grows upward from 5.1 to 6.7 inches, about the jump from a small phone to a big one, and Slidable Flex Duet, which pulls out on both sides from 8.1 to 12.4 inches.
None of these is a phone. At MWC26 in March 2026, Samsung Display’s show was about foldables, privacy screens and AI devices, not a rollable phone.
LG got closest, then quit
LG came nearest to selling one. It teased the LG Rollable at CES in January 2021, a phone that slid out into a bigger screen. On April 5, 2021, LG’s board approved closing its phone business worldwide, with the wind-down to be done by July 31, 2021. The LG Rollable never went on sale.
OPPO showed OPPO X 2021 at its INNO DAY event in Shenzhen on Nov. 17, 2020. Its OLED screen grew smoothly from 6.7 to 7.4 inches using what OPPO called a Roll Motor. OPPO presented it as a concept, and it never became a product.
Motorola’s phone that bends around your wrist
Motorola has shown two concepts at Lenovo’s Tech World events. The first, on Oct. 18, 2022, came from its in-house lab, 312 Labs. Its screen moved between three sizes at the press of a button: just over 4 inches tall when closed, a 6.5-inch screen when open and a “peek” setting in between. Motorola said it was “in the conceptual stage”.

The second, on Oct. 24, 2023, in Austin, went further than rolling. Its flexible pOLED screen works as a 6.9-inch phone when flat, stands up on its own with a 4.6-inch screen, and bends around your wrist like a band. Lenovo showed it again at MWC 2024, still as a concept.
What you can actually buy: a rollable laptop
The first rollable screen you can buy went into a laptop. On Jan. 7, 2025, Lenovo announced the ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 Rollable, which it calls the world’s first rollable display AI PC. It’s a 14-inch laptop until you press a key or make a hand gesture, and then the screen rolls up out of the base to 16.7 inches. Lenovo gave an expected starting price of $3,499 and a June 2025 start. Samsung Display says the screen is its rollable OLED, which it planned to start mass-producing in April 2025.

Lenovo has kept going. At CES on Jan. 6, 2026, it showed the Legion Pro Rollable, a gaming laptop concept whose screen unrolls sideways from 16 to 21.5 to 24 inches, pulled from both ends by two motors. Lenovo gave it no price or date.
How much a rollable phone could cost
Expected price: about $2,499 to $2,899. That’s our estimate. No company has announced a rollable phone or a price. New screen shapes launch at the top of the market: Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra starts at $2,099.99 and its first Galaxy Z TriFold went on sale at $2,899 in the US. The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999.

We’ll update this page when a company announces a rollable phone, a date or a price.
