When does OpenAI's first device come out? Not before the end of February 2027

OpenAI has not announced a release date for its first device. The clearest timeline the company has given came in court, not on stage: in February 2026, OpenAI said it now expects its first hardware device will not ship before the end of February 2027. It has not announced the name, the price or what the device does.

When is the OpenAI device coming out?

OpenAI first put a timeline on the record in June 2025, when it said the release of its first product was at least a year away. On Feb. 9, 2026, it updated that in a court filing: it now expects its first hardware device will not ship before the end of February 2027. A filing on March 13, 2026, repeated that the product will not ship until February 2027 at the earliest.

Both 2026 statements came in a trademark case over the io name brought by iyO, a startup developing AI earbuds. The parties filed a joint notice of settlement on July 27, 2026. OpenAI has not given a newer timeline since.

What will the OpenAI device be?

OpenAI has not said. Its May 2025 announcement described the goal in broad terms: computers can now see, think and understand, yet the way people use them is still shaped by traditional products and interfaces. In its March 2026 filing, OpenAI told the court that its first hardware product will not be an in-ear device and that it has not announced any functionality.

Who is designing it?

Jony Ive and LoveFrom began working quietly with Sam Altman and OpenAI in 2023, and a year later Ive founded io Products with Scott Cannon, Evans Hankey and Tang Tan. The io team, hardware and software engineers, physicists, researchers and manufacturing experts, merged with OpenAI on July 9, 2025, to work with its research, engineering and product teams in San Francisco. Ive and his design collective LoveFrom remain independent and have taken on deep design and creative responsibilities across OpenAI.
