Sensor, autofocus and burst shooting

The FP2 uses a 24.5MP partially stacked full-frame CMOS sensor behind the L-Mount. Faster readout cuts rolling shutter distortion, and that speed allows bursts of up to about 20 fps for up to 200 frames.

Autofocus combines phase and contrast detection and tracks people, dogs, cats and, new for the series, birds, with eye detection. Still ISO runs from 100 to 102,400, and shutter speeds go from 1/25,600 of a second to 30 seconds, plus bulb up to five minutes. A dedicated Color button cycles through 13 color modes built on Sigma’s color science.

A switch on top moves between STILL and CINE, and each mode has its own interface and menus. In CINE mode the FP2 records 6K OpenGate, using the whole sensor, at up to 59.94 fps, and 4K at up to 59.94 fps, with 100 and 119.88 fps in a crop mode.

Formats include Apple ProRes RAW HQ and ProRes RAW up to 6K at 29.97 fps, H.264, H.265 and Leica’s L-Log. Sigma rates dynamic range at up to 14.1 stops in 4K full-frame L-Log. With the optional HU-21 hot shoe plus Panasonic’s DMW-XLR2 XLR adapter or DMW-DMS1 shotgun microphone, the camera records 32-bit float audio. The Director’s Viewfinder function simulates the framing of cinema cameras such as the ARRI ALEXA 35 and Sony VENICE 2 and BURANO.

Electronic image stabilization works for video only, and it can’t be combined with 6K recording.

Screen, storage, ports and battery

The 3.15-inch touch screen has about 2.1 million dots and tilts up 90° and down 45°. Inside sits 70GB of internal storage next to an SDXC UHS-II slot, and a portable SSD can record over USB 3.2.

Two USB-C ports handle charging, the viewfinder, webcam output and drives, along with a full-size HDMI 2.1 port and a 3.5 mm jack that takes a microphone or timecode. The BP-91 battery lasts about 370 photos or 130 minutes of video, which Sigma says is about 30% more than the original fp.

Accessories

Standard 1/4-inch screw holes on both sides and the bottom accept Sigma and third-party rigs. The new add-ons are the EVF-21 viewfinder, the HU-21 hot shoe unit, the BPL-21 base plate with a 3/8-inch screw, the LVF-21 screen loupe with 2.5x magnification, the BC-91 charger and the CN-91 DC connector.

FAQ

Does the Sigma FP2 have a viewfinder?

The body relies on a tilting 3.15-inch touch screen and has no built-in viewfinder. The optional EVF-21, a 0.5-inch OLED panel with about 5.76 million dots, attaches through a USB-C port, tilts up to 90° and has an eye sensor.

Can the Sigma FP2 record to an SSD?

Yes. Besides 70GB of internal storage and an SDXC slot with UHS-II support, the FP2 records to a portable SSD over its USB 3.2 port, with bus power for the drive.

Is the Sigma FP2 weather sealed?

Sigma calls the body dust and splash resistant, good for light rain, and says it isn’t waterproof. It works from 32 to 104 °F.
