Red Dead Redemption 2 PS5: there's no native version, but the PS4 game plays on PS5 and costs $14.99 until Oct. 21

Red Dead Redemption 2 plays on PS5, but only as the PS4 game it launched as in 2018. Here’s what that means for upgrades, price, PS Plus and Red Dead Online.

Is Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS5?

Yes, as a PS4 game. Rockstar Games released Red Dead Redemption 2 on Oct. 26, 2018, for PS4 and Xbox One, and the US PlayStation Store still lists PS4 as its only platform. Sony’s store page says the game is playable on PS5, with a standard note that some features available on PS4 can be missing on the newer console.

Rockstar hasn’t released a native PS5 version, so the game you download on a PS5 is the same one PS4 owners play. Xbox works the same way: the Xbox One version plays on Xbox Series X and S through backward compatibility. Either way, you get the full story, which follows outlaw Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang on the run across America in 1899, plus Red Dead Online.

Is there a PS5 upgrade or next-gen update?

Rockstar hasn’t released a PS5 upgrade, free or paid, and it hasn’t announced a next-gen update for Red Dead Redemption 2. Owners of the PS4 version install it on PS5 as it is, and there’s nothing extra to claim in the PlayStation Store.

Rockstar has brought an older game to the current consoles before. Red Dead Redemption, the 2010 original, arrived on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S on Dec. 2, 2025, the same day as its Switch 2 Edition, as our Red Dead Redemption Switch 2 page explains. Rockstar hasn’t said whether the sequel gets the same treatment. Expected price for a native PS5 version of Red Dead Redemption 2: about $49.99, our estimate, in line with the first game’s Switch 2 Edition.

Price on the PlayStation Store

On Oct. 19, 2026, Red Dead Redemption 2 cost $14.99 on the US PlayStation Store, 75% off its regular $59.99. The sale ends at 11:59 p.m. PT on Oct. 21, which is 2:59 a.m. ET on Oct. 22. The Ultimate Edition costs $89.99 and isn’t part of the sale.

On PC, Steam has the same deal, $14.99 instead of $59.99, on Oct. 19. Either way, the PS4 version you buy on the PlayStation Store is the one that runs on PS5.

Included with PlayStation Plus Extra

The PlayStation Store lists Red Dead Redemption 2 as included with PlayStation Plus Extra, the tier with Sony’s Game Catalog. Extra and Premium members download it at no extra cost while it stays in the catalog, and that copy is the same PS4 version that runs on PS5.

If you already pay for Extra, there’s no reason to buy the game during the sale unless you want to keep it after leaving PS Plus. The catalog’s latest additions are on our PS Plus games for October 2026 page.

Red Dead Online on PS5

Red Dead Online, the game’s multiplayer mode, comes with Red Dead Redemption 2 and also sells on its own. The standalone version costs $9.99 until Oct. 21, down from $19.99, and like the main game it’s a PS4 title that plays on PS5.

Gold Bars, Red Dead Online’s premium currency, start at $9.99 for 25 on the PlayStation Store and go up to $99.99 for 350. Rockstar’s most recent bonus event, in June 2026, boosted rewards for every Role, from Bounty Hunters to Traders and Collectors.

PS5 Pro, performance and saves

Rockstar hasn’t released a PS5 or PS5 Pro patch for Red Dead Redemption 2, so it runs as the PS4 version on both consoles. Sony says the PS5 Pro's Game Boost feature can stabilize or improve the performance of backward compatible PS4 games. Console prices are on our PS5 Pro price page.

Because it’s the same PS4 game, your story saves come with you. Move them from a PS4 with PlayStation Plus cloud storage, a USB drive or the PS5’s data transfer, and Red Dead Online progress is stored online with your account.

Sales and what’s next from Rockstar

Red Dead Redemption 2 has shipped more than 87 million copies, according to Take-Two’s August 2026 investor presentation, and the whole Red Dead series is at nearly 116 million. It came to PC on Nov. 5, 2019, and it hasn’t come to a Nintendo console, as our Red Dead Redemption 2 Switch 2 page explains.
