Grounded 2’s Rot and Ruin update is live, the game’s first big update since Into the Abyss in August. Patch 0.6.0 arrived on Oct. 20 with a new area, a new Buggy, base painting and a PC download half its old size. Here’s everything in the patch notes and what comes next.
When did the Rot and Ruin update come out?
Obsidian Entertainment released Rot and Ruin, patch 0.6.0, on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026, and posted the full notes on Steam at 3:07 p.m. ET, the same day as Xbox’s announcement. The update went live two weeks after its public test build opened on Oct. 6, about the same gap as The Toxic Tangle in January and Buggy Racing in May, and the notes list the fixes made between the test and launch.
Grounded 2 is in Game Preview on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and ROG Xbox Ally handhelds, in Early Access on Steam and on PS5 since Aug. 11, 2026. Steam showed 4,920 players in the game on the afternoon of Oct. 22, and its reviews stand at Very Positive from more than 15,000 players.
The Woodpile, Termites and the Centipede boss. The new adventure area is the Woodpile, a maze of towering structures and winding passages taken over by Termites. The whole family is back: Workers, Soldiers, a Queen and the Termite King, plus new O.G.R.R. variants with new attacks and, in Obsidian’s words, “particularly strange behavior.”
The update also adds a Centipede boss fight, with its own mutation, trinket, Centipede Staff, armor set and furniture: a Cauldron, a Candle and an Apothecary. New gear from the area includes the Termite Tricorne, Half-Plate and Boots, the Centi-Cultist Mask, Robe and Leggings, and the Cane-tipede. Four new mutations round it out: Royal Termissary, Howl of the Centipede, Rascal Rogue and Dodge Master.
The Potato Beetle Buggy. The Potato Beetle Buggy is bigger than the Ladybug Buggy and built for close-range fights. Its shotgun-like turret fires a spread of projectiles at anything in front of it, a charge projectile hits a whole horde at once, and its Healing Roar keeps the rider in the fight. Out of ammo, it refills by pulverizing the corpses of beaten creatures. Between fights, it hauls resources and contributes materials to blueprints.
Painting comes to Grounded 2 with the Splotcher, a paintball gun that colors walls, floors, roofs, stairs, doors and other structures with crafted paint. The new Splotch Mixer joins other new buildings such as the Yoking Press, the EverChar Diffuser and a Pumpkin Floor kit.
Gear grows with the player too. Bismuth, a new resource tied to the Raw Science beneath the Park, upgrades weapons and armor to higher Tiers at the Yoking Press. The Abyss gets Bismuth, new diggable chests, geysers that warm the players nearby and better navigation.
Combat adds Perfect Dodge: a well-timed dodge takes no damage and uses no stamina, which opens an instant counterattack. Mutation loadouts swap in the Hotpouch radial menu, and collectors get 8 SCA.B color schemes and 5 figurines that become statues for a base.
The PC version is 51% smaller, down from 37 GB to 18 GB, and console versions lose 200 to 300 MB. Grounded 2 moved to Unreal Engine 5.7 with large performance improvements, and the notes list fixes for rubber banding in multiplayer, crossplay on PS5 and a main story quest that failed to trigger on some saves.
Rot and Ruin is free for everyone who owns Grounded 2, which costs $29.99 on Steam, and for Game Pass Ultimate, Game Pass Premium and PC Game Pass members, with Xbox Play Anywhere across Xbox and PC. Obsidian says version 1.0 arrives in 2027. Expected price of 1.0: about $39.99, our estimate, what the first Grounded costs on Steam.
Our estimate for the next major update is January 2027. Obsidian has shipped eight major updates in the 15 months since the July 2025 launch, about one every two months, and The Toxic Tangle arrived on Jan. 27, 2026.
