Dark Souls 4 release date: not announced, and FromSoftware called Dark Souls III's expansions the series' final episodes
Dark Souls 4 doesn't have a release date, because FromSoftware hasn't announced it. The last new Dark Souls game, Dark Souls III, came out in 2016, and when FromSoftware dated its final expansion, The Ringed City, it described the content as the final episodes of the series. Since then, FromSoftware and Bandai Namco have made Elden Ring instead, and the Dark Souls series has sold more than 27 million copies.

Dark Souls III is 10 years old, and FromSoftware hasn’t made a fourth. Here’s what’s official about Dark Souls 4, and why the series may already be finished.
When does Dark Souls 4 come out?
There’s no release date, because FromSoftware hasn’t announced Dark Souls 4. It hasn’t revealed a sequel, a platform or a trailer, and dates and videos shared online under the Dark Souls 4 name aren’t official.

The last new game in the series, Dark Souls III, came out in 2016. By simple arithmetic, that’s 10 years as of 2026.
Is Dark Souls finished?
FromSoftware hasn’t said so in those words, but it came close. Dark Souls III got two expansions: Ashes of Ariandel in October 2016 and The Ringed City in March 2017. When FromSoftware dated The Ringed City on Jan. 23, 2017, it called it the second and final expansion for Dark Souls III and said the two expansions contain the final episodes in the series.
The studio’s next joint project with Bandai Namco wasn’t Dark Souls but Elden Ring, a new action RPG that came out on Feb. 25, 2022; see our Elden Ring 2 release date page for where that series stands.
How big Dark Souls was
On May 19, 2020, FromSoftware announced that the Dark Souls series had sold more than 27 million copies, counting physical copies shipped and digital downloads, and that Dark Souls III alone had passed 10 million. The series ran from Dark Souls on PS3 in 2011 to Dark Souls II in 2014 and Dark Souls III in 2016.

Dark Souls Remastered, an updated version of the first game, came out on May 25, 2018, in North America on PS4, Xbox One and PC, and on Nintendo Switch on Oct. 19, 2018. On Steam, Dark Souls III is $59.99 and Dark Souls Remastered is $39.99. FromSoftware hasn’t announced a remaster of Dark Souls II or III.
What FromSoftware is making now
FromSoftware’s next announced game is The Duskbloods, an online PvPvE game for Nintendo Switch 2 that’s still due in 2026; see our The Duskbloods release date page. It hasn’t announced sequels to its other action games either; see our Bloodborne 2 release date and Sekiro 2 release date pages.

This page is updated as soon as FromSoftware announces Dark Souls 4 or a new Dark Souls game.
