PS6 handheld release date: Sony hasn't announced one, and PlayStation Portal is still its only handheld

There's no PS6 handheld release date, because Sony hasn't announced a PS6 handheld. As of Oct. 16, 2026, Sony hasn't announced a PlayStation 6 at all, and the only PlayStation you can hold in your hands is PlayStation Portal, which launched on Nov. 15, 2023, at $199.99 and has cost $249.99 since Apr. 2, 2026. Portal doesn't run games on its own: it streams them from a PS5 over Wi-Fi, or from the cloud with PlayStation Plus Premium. Claims about a portable PS6 haven't been confirmed by Sony.

A PlayStation you can take anywhere is one of the most searched next-gen ideas. Sony hasn’t announced one. Here’s what it actually sells, and what’s official about the next PlayStation.

Has Sony announced a PS6 handheld?

No. Sony hasn’t announced a PS6 handheld, so there’s no release date, no price and no spec sheet. It hasn’t announced a PlayStation 6 either. The only official signal is in Sony’s financial reports: on May 8, 2026, and again on July 31, Sony named investment in a next-generation platform among PlayStation’s costs. It didn’t say what that platform is, whether it includes a portable, or when it goes on sale. Our PS6 page tracks everything Sony has said.

PlayStation Portal: Sony’s only handheld today

Sony announced PlayStation Portal on Aug. 23, 2023, and launched it on Nov. 15, 2023, at $199.99. It has an 8-inch LCD screen that runs at up to 1080p and 60fps, with the key features of the DualSense controller, including adaptive triggers and haptic feedback.

Portal doesn’t run games on its own. At launch, it could only play games installed on your PS5, streamed over Wi-Fi. On Nov. 5, 2025, Sony made cloud streaming official on Portal: PlayStation Plus Premium members can stream select PS5 games from the PS Plus catalog and digital PS5 games they own, with no console needed. Since Apr. 2, 2026, Portal costs $249.99 in the US.

What a PlayStation handheld would cost

Sony hasn’t given a price for any new handheld. Its prices have been climbing, though. Since Apr. 2, 2026, the PS5 costs $649.99, the PS5 Digital Edition $599.99 and the PS5 Pro $899.99, and Sony has pointed to a global surge in memory chip prices.

The rest of the handheld market moved the same way. Nintendo raised the Switch 2 price to $499.99 on Sept. 1, Valve’s Steam Deck OLED went up to $789 in May (our Steam Deck 2 page has the details), and the special-edition ROG Xbox Ally X20 costs $1,299.

Rumors, and what to watch next

Claims about a portable PS6 that plays PS5 and PS4 games natively keep coming up online. Sony hasn’t confirmed any of them, and it doesn’t comment on unannounced hardware.

The next official clues will come from Sony itself: its quarterly results, where the next-generation platform spending shows up, and any PlayStation hardware announcement.

This page is updated as soon as Sony announces a PlayStation handheld, a PS6, a price or a date.
