iPhone 20 all-screen design: will the 2027 iPhone finally lose the Dynamic Island?

Apple hasn't announced an iPhone 20, and it hasn't said whether its 2027 iPhone will be all screen. Reports and leaks point three ways: a screen with no cutout at all, Face ID hidden under the screen with a small hole for the camera, or a smaller Dynamic Island that stays through 2027. Apple has already taken one step. The foldable iPhone Duo, on sale Oct. 23, hides its inner FaceTime camera under the display.

Apple has wanted an iPhone that is all screen for almost 20 years. Its 2027 phone could be the one that gets there, or it could keep a small cutout for another year or more. Here’s what Apple has shipped so far and what the reports and leaks say about the iPhone 20.

Will the iPhone 20 be all screen?

Apple hasn’t announced an iPhone 20 or any 2027 iPhone, and its US store lists none. Its newest phones are the iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max and foldable iPhone Duo, announced on Sept. 9, 2026. Reports point to fall 2027 for two anniversary Pro models, and our iPhone 20 release date explainer covers the name and timing.

On the screen, the reports point three ways:

  • No cutout at allIn May 2025 a business news reporter citing people familiar with Apple’s plans described a mostly glass, curved iPhone with no cutouts in the display. A tech business report the same month said at least one 2027 iPhone would have Face ID and the front camera under the screen.
  • Face ID under the screen, a small hole for the cameraA leaker on a Chinese social network says Face ID sits fully under the display while the front camera keeps a small hole-punch. In May 2026 the leaker said a 2027 prototype has this layout.
  • The Dynamic Island staysA display industry analyst says the smaller Dynamic Island stays through 2027, a hole-punch camera comes on 2028 Pro models and a truly all-screen iPhone won’t come before 2030.

None of the three is confirmed. Our iPhone 20 rumor tracker labels and dates each claim.

Twenty years of chasing an all-screen iPhone

The first iPhone, announced Jan. 9, 2007, had a Home button under the screen. Ten years later, on Sept. 12, 2017, Apple announced the iPhone X from $999, with a 5.8-inch OLED screen that ran almost edge to edge and Face ID in place of the Home button. Its cameras and sensors sat in a cutout at the top that most people called the notch.

Jony Ive, then Apple’s chief design officer, said that for more than a decade Apple had wanted an iPhone that is all display, and called the iPhone X “the realization of that vision.”

The notch got smaller, then changed shape. On Sept. 7, 2022, Apple announced the iPhone 14 Pro with the Dynamic Island, a pill-shaped cutout that grows to show alerts, notifications and activities. Apple said it redesigned the TrueDepth camera to take up less of the screen. On Sept. 9, 2026, it announced the iPhone 18 Pro with a smaller Dynamic Island that still holds Face ID and can now show three Live Activities at once.

The same day Apple showed its first phone with a camera under the screen. The iPhone Duo has a FaceTime camera beneath its 7.6-inch inner display that stays hidden when you’re not using it, so the open screen has no hole. Its 5.4-inch outer screen still shows a small camera cutout.

What it takes to hide Face ID and the camera

A camera under a screen has to see through it. Samsung, which put an under-display camera in its Galaxy Z Fold3 in August 2021, says it lowers the pixel density over the camera so light can reach the sensor. That tradeoff shows: the patch can look different from the rest of the screen, and light bending through the panel can make photos hazy or blurry. Samsung’s engineers say they use AI to clean up the image.

Face ID is harder. It isn’t one camera. Apple’s TrueDepth system uses a dot projector, an infrared camera and a flood illuminator, and Apple said in 2017 that it projects more than 30,000 invisible dots to map your face. All of those parts would have to work through the screen and stay as secure as they are today.

That’s why the leaks keep landing on a middle step: Face ID under the screen first, with a small camera hole left over. A 2025 report said the iPhone 18 Pro would move Face ID under the screen, and Apple shipped it with a smaller Dynamic Island instead.

A screen that curves over every edge

The second half of the all-screen idea is the edges. In May 2025 a Korean trade newspaper said Apple wants an OLED panel that bends down all four edges, so the screen looks frameless. A May 2026 follow-up said the 2027 panel accepts some distortion in the curves, with a better version planned for 2028. In September 2025 a Korean trade newspaper said Samsung will supply a panel with no polarizer layer, which makes a screen brighter and thinner.

The leaks keep shifting. In April 2026 a leaker on a Chinese social network described a custom Samsung panel curved equally on all four sides. In August the same leaker said the panel is flat and the curved, borderless look comes from the glass on top. A Chinese leaker on X says Apple may call it a “Liquid Glass Display.” A September leak puts the screens at about 6.41 and 6.96 inches, up from 6.3 and 6.9 inches on the 18 Pro and Pro Max.

Glass front, glass back

The body could change too. On Aug. 10, 2026, a business news reporter said a glass-centric redesign is on track for the 2027 Pro models, with glass front and back curving into the sides around a thin metal band, and later called it the biggest Pro overhaul since the iPhone X. The same day an investment bank analyst citing supply chain checks said the all-glass model had been canceled over poor production yields. The reporter said only a version with even more glass was dropped early. Both claims are still standing.

When it could arrive, and what it could cost

No date is set. Apple announced its Pro iPhones on Sept. 9 in 2024, 2025 and 2026, with sales starting about 10 days later. A business news reporter said in June 2026 that two anniversary models, sized like the 18 Pro and Pro Max, arrive in late 2027 next to a second foldable.

Expected price: about $1,299 for the Pro model. That’s our estimate: $100 above the iPhone 18 Pro’s $1,199, the same step Apple took this year, with memory costs still rising. In June 2026 Tim Cook, then Apple’s CEO, said price increases are unavoidable. Apple hasn’t announced the phone or a price.

Signs to look for before fall 2027

  1. Oct. 23, 2026The iPhone Duo goes on sale, the first chance for buyers to see how well Apple hides a camera under a screen.
  2. Nov. 2, 2026Apple’s fiscal fourth-quarter results call at 2 p.m. PT. On the April call, John Ternus, now Apple’s CEO, said Apple has “an incredible roadmap ahead” but wouldn’t discuss its details.
  3. Fall 2027Apple’s usual September iPhone event. Until Apple shows the phone, every design claim above is a report or a leak.
