Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake cancelled: Ubisoft stopped development in January 2026
The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake is cancelled. Ubisoft listed it on Jan. 21, 2026, among six games it discontinued as part of a company-wide reset, and said in a statement that it had stopped development because the game couldn't reach the quality fans deserve. The remake had been due in 2026, and Ubisoft says it isn't stepping away from Prince of Persia.

The Sands of Time remake won’t be coming back from its delays. Ubisoft stopped development in January 2026, a few months before its planned release year began.
Is the Sands of Time remake cancelled? Yes. On Jan. 21, 2026, Ubisoft announced a reset of its organization and portfolio and said it had discontinued six games that didn’t meet its new quality and portfolio criteria. The list included Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake, along with four unannounced titles, three of them new IPs, and a mobile game.
In a separate statement to fans, Ubisoft said it had made the difficult decision to stop development. The project had real potential, it said, but “we weren’t able to reach the level of quality you deserve,” and continuing would have needed more time and investment than it could responsibly commit.
What happened to the remake. Ubisoft revealed the remake at Ubisoft Forward in September 2020, made by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai, with a release date of Jan. 21, 2021. In December 2020, it moved the date to March 18, 2021, and the game later slipped again. In 2022, Ubisoft handed development to Ubisoft Montreal, the studio behind the 2003 original. In a 2023 update, the team said the game was in its conception phase and asked fans not to expect news that year.
At Ubisoft Forward in June 2024, a short teaser said the remake was rebuilt from the ground up, had entered full production and would launch in 2026, with Ubisoft Montreal supported by studios in Toronto, Bucharest, Paris and Pune. By simple arithmetic, Ubisoft cancelled it about 19 months later, just as the promised release year began.
Ubisoft says no. Its statement says Prince of Persia continues to matter deeply and that the decision doesn’t mean it’s stepping away from the franchise. In its new structure, Prince of Persia is one of the brands in Creative House 4, alongside Anno, Might & Magic, Rayman and Beyond Good & Evil. Ubisoft hasn’t announced a new Prince of Persia game.
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, a side-scrolling action game from Ubisoft Montpellier, came out on Jan. 18, 2024, and reached Steam on Aug. 8, 2024, where it’s $29.99. The Rogue Prince of Persia, a roguelite from Evil Empire, left early access on Aug. 20, 2025. When we checked Steam on Oct. 17, 2026, it was on sale for $8.99, down from $29.99.
Ubisoft did finish another remake, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, which came out on July 9, 2026. See what’s next for the studio’s biggest series on the Assassin’s Creed Hexe release date page, and for its open-world shooters on the Far Cry 7 release date page.
