What’s new in Revenant Blades?
It combines Muramasa: Rebirth, released on the PlayStation Vita in 2013, with its Genroku Legends add-on for the first time. The original game, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, came out on the Wii in 2009. The art and animation have been upgraded to 4K, the game has a new localization with English voice acting for the first time, and Marvelous promises updated controls, new combat and weapon systems and new modes. It’s also the first Vanillaware game on PC.
There’s extra content too: the Scroll, a gallery of illustrations, a Character Viewer for animations and backgrounds and a Replay mode for scenes from your journey. A classic mode includes the Vita versions of Muramasa: The Demon Blade and Genroku Legends with enhanced graphics.
Six heroes and the cursed swords
The story is set in Japan’s Genroku era, when the legendary smith Senji Muramasa forged swords that grant their owners great power and a madness that only blood can satisfy. Factions fight over the blades, and demons and evil spirits drawn by the bloodshed roam the land. You can play six protagonists, Momohime, Kisuke, Okoi, Gonbe, Arashimaru and Rajaki, all available from the start, and each story stands alone, so you can play them in any order.

How the combat works
It’s a side-scrolling action game. You chain normal attacks into combos, mix in dashes and jumps, parry attacks and, with the right timing, deflect ranged ones. Skills such as single strikes, wide-area attacks and ranged attacks each take one button. Kisuke and Momohime forge new swords with the swordsmith Muramasa, more than 100 in all, while Okoi, Gonbe, Arashimaru and Rajaki train to learn skills and craft charms. Both use souls from defeated enemies. You can assign up to three mastered skills each for ground and air combat and switch between them with the directional pad.

Rating, languages and who makes it
The ESRB rates the game T for Teen, according to Steam, for Fantasy Violence, Mild Blood, Suggestive Themes, Partial Nudity, Mild Language and Use of Alcohol and Tobacco. It’s single-player. Steam lists full English and Japanese audio and text in 10 languages, including French, German, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese and Korean, and the PC requirements aren’t out yet. Vanillaware develops the game, and Marvelous publishes it, through Marvelous USA and its XSEED Games label in the Americas.
Muramasa: Revenant Blades shares its release day with Metro 2039, a week after XSEED’s Fate/Extra Record. For everything else dated so far, see our upcoming games of 2027 list and our upcoming PS5 games.
