Nippon Ichi’s hand-painted farming sim with a horror twist reaches English-speaking players on Oct. 27, on four platforms at once. Here’s when Village in the Shade comes out on Switch 2, what each edition costs and what changes on Steam.
When does Village in the Shade come out on Switch 2?
Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2026. NIS America releases the game the same day on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch and PS5 in North America, and the Nintendo eShop lists Oct. 27 for both Nintendo versions. The ESRB rates it Teen for Violence, Blood, Language and Use of Alcohol and Tobacco.
PC players have had the game since July 29, 2026, when it launched on Steam in Japanese, Korean and Chinese. Oct. 27 is the day it becomes a worldwide release: the consoles launch in English, French and Spanish, and Steam gets the same three languages in an official patch.
Price and editions
The game costs $49.99 on the Nintendo eShop, the same for the Switch 2 and Switch versions, and $49.99 on Steam. NIS America’s own pages don’t list a standalone PS5 price. Expected price: $49.99 on PS5, our estimate, matching the eShop and Steam.

For collectors, NIS America’s online store sells the Limited Edition for $89.99 on Switch, Switch 2 and PS5. The box holds the Deluxe Edition of the game, a collector’s box, an art book, a digipak soundtrack, an acrylic stand, a set of five enamel pins and a sticker sheet. The Switch 2 Limited Edition is a Game-Key Card, so the cartridge carries a key that downloads the game instead of the full game. Expected price: $49.99 for a standard boxed copy, our estimate, the same as the digital version.
On Steam, the Deluxe Edition bundle costs $65.07 and adds the Touring Kagatsu Artbook, 31 pages of character bios, animal designs and environment art, and the Sounds from the Shade soundtrack with all 38 in-game tracks by Kazuya Takasu and ZIZZ STUDIO. Each extra also sells separately for $9.99.
Switch 2 or Switch: which version to buy
The eShop sells the Switch 2 and Switch versions as separate games at $49.99 each and lists no upgrade pack between them, so pick the version that matches your console. Both versions support TV, tabletop and handheld modes, and Save Data Cloud backups require a Nintendo Switch Online membership.
The Nintendo listings show English, French and Spanish text, and the game is single player on every platform. A handheld farming sim is a natural fit for Switch 2: a day in Kagatsu runs on a clock, so short sessions on the go work well.
Is Village in the Shade in English?
Yes, from Oct. 27. NIS America confirmed the English, French and Spanish patch for Steam on Aug. 10, dated for Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2026, the console launch day. One detail matters for anyone who started early on Steam: the display language is saved separately for each save file and can’t be changed after a game has started. Set the language under the game’s Properties in your Steam Library before launching, and start a new save to play in English.

Life in Kagatsu, and its three rules
Kagatsu is a mountain village in Japan. You move in, plant crops, decorate your house with furniture from the shops in town and craft fences and other items from what you gather around the farm. The village celebrates traditional festivals, such as the summer festival and cherry-blossom viewing, and the neighbors open up as you spend time with them. As one resident puts it in the game, “the villagers will treat you like one of our own.”

The welcome comes with conditions. Kagatsu has three rules: don’t talk to strangers, don’t leave the village and, above all, don’t go out at night. Every resident has something to hide, and NIS America leaves the choice to you: dig into the truth about Kagatsu at your own risk, or follow the rules and never see the part of the village you don’t want to. The game’s patch notes name two modes, Village in the Shade and Village in the Sunshine, with different story conditions.
How the farming works
The farm goes well beyond a field of vegetables. The patch notes describe rice paddies, where ducks eat the weeds, livestock from chickens and ducks to cows, goats and cashmere goats, scarecrows that protect crops and processing machines that turn harvests into goods. Away from the farm, you fish at spots such as the waterfall, set traps for wild animals, earn a pheasant hunting permit and dig down through the floors of a quarry. Some events happen only at night, which is exactly when the rules say to stay inside. The Steam version has 52 achievements.

Updates and DLC
Steam players already have Free Update 1, patch 1.20 from Sept. 29, which added 11 pieces of camping furniture, silkie chickens, mallards, fluffy cows and spotted goats, an extra plot of farmland and a Furniture Catalog that delivers repeat orders to your mailbox. Free Update 2 arrives on Oct. 27 with a birthday event for the protagonist and other new features. Paid DLC with new mechanics, scenarios, maps and events follows in spring 2027.

On PC
Steam lists Windows 10 or 11, an Intel Core i5-6400, 8 GB of memory, a GeForce GTX 750 Ti and 9 GB of storage as the minimum, so almost any gaming PC from the last decade runs it. The game has full controller support, including DualSense.
Oct. 27 is a busy day on Nintendo’s console: Minecraft for Switch 2 launches the same day. For a lighter pick two days later, see Hello Kitty Party Land, and for the rest of the fall, our upcoming Switch 2 games and upcoming PS5 games lists.
This page is updated as soon as NIS America announces a launch time, a PS5 price or the spring 2027 DLC for Village in the Shade.
