Mass Effect 5 release date: BioWare says the next game is in development, but there's no date or title yet

There’s still no Mass Effect 5 release date, and no official name either. BioWare’s next Mass Effect has been teased since 2020, and the studio now says its whole team is working on it. Here’s what’s official.

When is Mass Effect 5 coming out?

BioWare hasn’t said. There’s no release date, no window, no platforms and no official title. Mass Effect 5 is just the name players use, while BioWare only refers to the next Mass Effect.

The game was first teased at The Game Awards on Dec. 10, 2020, with a short teaser in which Liara T’Soni, a favorite from the original trilogy, finds a piece of N7 armor in the snow. Since then, BioWare has dropped small hints every N7 Day, its yearly celebration of the series on Nov. 7, but it hasn’t shown gameplay.

The most recent update was the N7 Day 2025 post from Mike Gamble, the series' executive producer. Gamble said the studio had heard the rumors and wanted to set the record straight: the next Mass Effect game is in development, and EA and BioWare remain committed to telling more stories in the universe. Gamble added that there’s no secret game information hidden in the post.

What BioWare has said about the next game

Details are thin. In the 2025 post, Gamble wrote that the team is heads-down and focused exclusively on Mass Effect, with a lot of universe to cover, lots of features to build and “lots of romances to figure out.” BioWare promised to show the game when it’s ready.

The year before, BioWare kept N7 Day quiet on purpose, because the studio had just launched Dragon Age: The Veilguard. In 2023, the N7 Day post teased the big questions fans keep asking, like what happened to the characters from the trilogy, and said the answers would come later.

What’s changed at BioWare and EA

BioWare’s last game didn’t land the way EA hoped. Dragon Age: The Veilguard launched in October 2024, and in January 2025, EA said it had engaged about 1.5 million players in its first quarter, nearly 50% below the company’s expectations. Since then, BioWare has worked only on Mass Effect.

EA itself has also changed hands. On Aug. 4, 2026, a group of investors made up of the Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake and Affinity Partners completed its purchase of EA at $210 per share, and EA became a private company. Neither EA nor BioWare has said how that affects the next Mass Effect.

Where to play Mass Effect now

The newest game in the series is Mass Effect: Andromeda, from March 2017, set in a different galaxy, with a new hero. It’s $39.99 for the Deluxe Edition on Steam. The original trilogy, from 2007 to 2012, is in Mass Effect Legendary Edition, a remaster released on May 14, 2021, for $59.99 on Steam, and it’s also on PlayStation and Xbox.

Mass Effect is heading to TV, too. Gamble wrote that BioWare is working closely with Amazon on a series, that the writers room is going strong and that the show will tell a brand-new story set after the original trilogy, with its place in the canon already worked out against the new game.

Rumors, and when news could come

Plenty of claims about the next game’s engine, setting and release year have circulated, and some point to a release no earlier than 2028. BioWare hasn’t confirmed any of them.

The most likely date for news is N7 Day on Saturday, Nov. 7, when BioWare posts its yearly update. After that, The Game Awards on Dec. 10, where the game was first teased, is covered on our Game Awards 2026 page. For RPGs that already have dates, see our list of upcoming games in 2027.
