Mass Effect and Dragon Age: BioWare’s two big series

Mass Effect got four games: the trilogy in 2007, 2010 and 2012, then Andromeda in 2017. BioWare teased the next Mass Effect at The Game Awards on Dec. 10, 2020, and EA canceled it with the closure. Our page on Mass Effect 5 tracks what’s left of the series.

Dragon Age also got four: Origins in 2009, Dragon Age II in 2011, Inquisition in 2014 and The Veilguard in 2024. EA said in January 2025 that The Veilguard reached about 1.5 million players, roughly 50% below its expectations, and EA hasn’t announced another Dragon Age. Our Dragon Age 5 page follows the series.

Famous games BioWare didn’t make

Several big sequels to BioWare’s games came from other studios:

  • Baldur’s Gate 3 (2023) is by Larian Studios, and Larian ruled out expansions, as our Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC guide explains.
  • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords (2004) and Neverwinter Nights 2 (2006) are by Obsidian Entertainment.
  • The Enhanced Editions of Baldur’s Gate, Baldur’s Gate II and Neverwinter Nights are Beamdog’s updates of the BioWare originals.
  • The Knights of the Old Republic remake sits with Saber Interactive and has no release date, as our KOTOR remake page tracks.

Can you still play every BioWare game?

Sixteen of the 18 stay playable on PC. The single-player games run without BioWare’s help, and Broadsword Online Games has run Star Wars: The Old Republic since 2023.

Two games are out of reach. Anthem needed EA’s servers, and EA shut them down on Jan. 12, 2026, after announcing the date on July 3, 2025. Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood plays only from its cartridge on a Nintendo DS or 3DS.

This page is updated as soon as EA announces new plans for BioWare’s games or its two big series.
