It Takes Two on Switch 2: out since Oct. 15, 2026, with a free upgrade, 60 fps docked and crossplay at last
It Takes Two came out on Nintendo Switch 2 on Oct. 15, 2026, for $39.99 in Nintendo's US eShop, and owners of the original Switch version can upgrade for free. EA says the Switch 2 Edition runs at a native 1080p and 60 fps in docked mode, up from 30 fps on Switch, with sharper textures and better lighting. The same day, Hazelight added crossplay to the game, so Switch 2 players can team up online with friends on PC, PlayStation and Xbox. It's sold digitally and as a physical edition.

It Takes Two finally runs at 60 fps on a Nintendo console, and Switch owners don’t pay anything for it. Here’s what the Switch 2 Edition costs, changes and adds for co-op.
When did It Takes Two come out on Switch 2?
On Oct. 15, 2026, in most regions, and on Oct. 16 in Japan, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea because of time zones. EA and Hazelight Studios announced it during the Nintendo Direct of Sept. 9, 2026, and worked on the port with Turn Me Up Games.

Nintendo’s US eShop sells it for $39.99, the same standard price as on other platforms, and it’s rated T for Teen by the ESRB. It Takes Two first came out on March 26, 2021, won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2021, and reached the original Switch on Nov. 4, 2022. Hazelight said on Oct. 17, 2024, that it had sold more than 20 million copies.
How does the free upgrade work?
If you own It Takes Two on Nintendo Switch, EA says you can upgrade to the Switch 2 Edition for free. Digital owners upgrade in the Nintendo eShop, and owners of a physical copy use the in-game icon to get to the eShop. The upgrade has to go to the same Nintendo Account that owns the Switch version, and it isn’t available in Japan, Korea, Hong Kong or Taiwan.
You can only upgrade from the Switch edition, not from PC, PlayStation or Xbox. If you don’t own it, you can buy the Switch 2 Edition digitally or as a physical edition from retailers. EA didn’t offer pre-orders.
What’s better on Switch 2?
The frame rate, first of all. EA says the Switch 2 Edition runs at 60 fps in docked mode, up from 30 fps on the original Switch, at a native 1080p, even on a 4K TV. It also uses the highest-resolution textures, with better lighting, more complex visual effects, sharper dynamic shadows and faster loading. EA hasn’t listed figures for handheld mode.

It’s a bigger download than you might expect for a 2021 game. Nintendo’s store data puts it at about 37 GB, and its US store says the game needs a download of at least 36 GB and recommends a microSD card.
How does co-op work now?
It Takes Two is built for two players, and a free Friend’s Pass lets a partner who doesn’t own the game join you online for the whole story. Starting Oct. 15, 2026, Hazelight added online crossplay between PC, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4 and Nintendo Switch 2, after players had asked for it for a while. You only need to update the game. Online play needs a subscription on each side, like Nintendo Switch Online, PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass.

The original Switch isn’t part of crossplay. To play with a Switch owner, EA says you can use GameShare locally, or downgrade your copy to the Switch edition for free in the eShop to play online. For couch co-op, each player needs a pair of Joy-Con or a Pro Controller.
What about Split Fiction?
Hazelight’s newest game has been on Switch 2 since the console’s launch; see our Split Fiction Switch 2 page. On Oct. 15, 2026, Hazelight also announced the Hazelight Collection on Steam, with Split Fiction, It Takes Two and A Way Out.
