Borderlands 5 release date: Gearbox hasn't announced the next game, and Borderlands 4 is still getting DLC
Borderlands 5 doesn't have a release date, because Gearbox and 2K haven't announced it. Borderlands 4 came out on Sept. 12, 2025, and Gearbox is still releasing paid DLC for it, most recently Story Pack 2 and the Loveless the Hacker Vault Hunter on Sept. 10, 2026. Neither company has said what the next Borderlands game will be.
Borderlands 4 is a year old, and fans are already asking about the next one. Here’s what Gearbox and 2K have actually announced.
When does Borderlands 5 come out?
There’s no release date, because Borderlands 5 hasn’t been announced. Gearbox, 2K and Take-Two haven’t revealed a sequel, a title or a platform, and dates shared online aren’t official. Characters and settings presented as Borderlands 5 leaks haven’t been confirmed either.
Take-Two’s investor presentation of August 2026 describes Borderlands 4 as launched on Sept. 12, 2025, with an average review score of 82, and says Gearbox is supporting players with post-launch content. How long between Borderlands games?
The gaps have grown over time. The first Borderlands came out in October 2009, Borderlands 2 in September 2012, Borderlands 3 on Sept. 13, 2019, and Borderlands 4 on Sept. 12, 2025. By simple arithmetic, that’s about three years, then seven, then six. If the next gap matched the last one, it would point to 2031, but Gearbox hasn’t given any timing.

What Gearbox is doing with Borderlands 4
Gearbox is still adding to Borderlands 4 on Kairos. Story Pack 1: Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned arrived on March 26, 2026, with a new zone, and the Vault Hunter C4SH the Rogue came with it. On Sept. 10, 2026, Gearbox released Story Pack 2: FL4K and the Last Resort, which adds the region of Providence, along with the Vault Hunter Loveless the Hacker and Bounty Pack 5.
The free Version 1.10 update on the same day raised the level cap to 70. Story Packs cost $19.99 each, and each DLC Vault Hunter is $9.99. Gearbox hasn’t dated any DLC after Story Pack 2, and it moved its community newsletter from weekly to monthly on Oct. 2, 2026.
How the series is selling
Take-Two counts more than 100 million units sold across the Borderlands series. Borderlands 2 is 2K’s best-selling game, with more than 31 million units, and Borderlands 3 is 2K’s fastest-selling title. Take-Two agreed to buy Gearbox from Embracer Group in March 2024 for $460 million, so Gearbox and Borderlands now sit under the same company as Rockstar Games.
Borderlands 4 is $69.99 on Steam. Gearbox held a free play weekend on Steam from Sept. 10 to Sept. 14, 2026, for the game’s first anniversary.
