Total War: Warhammer 40,000 release date: no date or year yet, closed beta comes first

Total War: Warhammer 40,000 doesn’t have a release date or year yet. In its results presentation on Aug. 7, 2026, Sega listed the game as release date TBD, and the Steam page still says to be announced. The game is coming to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and the next step is a closed beta on PC.

When does Total War: Warhammer 40,000 come out?

Creative Assembly hasn’t said. When it revealed the game in December 2025, it said it wasn’t sharing a release date and would have much more to talk about in 2026. Since then, Sega has dated other games for early 2027, such as Stranger Than Heaven on Jan. 15 and Persona 4 Revival on Feb. 18, but it still lists Total War: Warhammer 40,000 without a date or a year. It isn’t among Sega’s dated games for the fiscal year that ends in March 2027.

Closed beta: who gets in and what’s in it

The closed beta is PC-only on Steam. Sign-ups closed on Sept. 14, 2026. Creative Assembly says so many people registered that it can’t let everyone in, so it’s sending an eligibility survey by email and will pick a mix of longtime Total War players and newcomers. Players who get in will be contacted later with test dates and access details.

Creative Assembly warns that the beta is a work in progress, with bugs, placeholder art, unfinished translations and balance problems. It’s meant to collect feedback while the game is still in development.

Platforms: PC, PS5 and Xbox

Sega says the game is coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. PC system requirements haven’t been released yet; Creative Assembly says they’ll come closer to launch. It’s the first Total War game with full Japanese voice acting, and on Steam it lists full audio in English, Japanese and Chinese.

Factions and campaign

The game takes Total War into the far future for the first time, to the 41st Millennium of Warhammer 40,000. You expand your empire turn by turn across a galactic sandbox, capture planets, upgrade fleets, bombard enemies from orbit and fight real-time battles on the ground. When things get desperate, you can even destroy whole planets.

You can play famous sub-factions and warlords or build your own custom army, with its own name, colors, iconography, abilities, traits and wargear.
