Sims 5 release date: EA hasn't announced The Sims 5, and Project Rene isn't it
There's no Sims 5 release date because EA hasn't announced The Sims 5. In January 2026, EA said Project Rene, long assumed to be the next main game, has become a social, mobile-first multiplayer life sim and isn't the successor to The Sims 4. EA also said single-player games for PC and console will stay part of the series, with more than half of its global team on The Sims 4 and what comes after it.

The Sims 5 still isn’t official, and the game many people assumed would be it has changed course. Here’s what EA has said about the future of The Sims and what it means for a new main game.
Is The Sims 5 announced?
No. EA hasn’t announced a game called The Sims 5, so there’s no release date, trailer or platform list.
The closest thing to a plan came on Jan. 9, 2026, when EA laid out the future of the series. It said it’s building a family of new Sims experiences across PC, console and mobile, each with its own world and way to play. It also said single-player games for PC and console will always be part of that future, with more than half of its global development team working on The Sims 4 and “the next evolution.”
EA promised more news in the coming months. Since then, its Sims news has been about The Sims 4, and no new single-player game has been named.
Project Rene isn’t The Sims 5
Project Rene was first shown as an early look at the next generation of The Sims, so many players treated it as The Sims 5. In the January update, EA said Rene has evolved into a social, collaborative, mobile-first life-sim game focused on playing with friends. It isn’t the successor to The Sims 4, and EA called it separate from any future deep, single-player life simulation.

EA also said it would keep playtesting new ideas through 2026, with limited market tests and The Sims Labs. Test builds can carry working names such as The Sims Labs: Life Together and The Sims Labs: Town Stories, and EA warned that some experiments won’t move forward at all.
Is The Sims 4 ending?
There’s no sign of that. EA said it will keep delivering content and updates for The Sims 4, and it’s still doing so. The Sept. 22, 2026, update focused on smarter autonomy, so Sims make more sensible choices on their own, along with crash fixes and a free set of new items for children in the base game.

The Sims 4 also has a creator economy now. The Sims Maker Program launched in March 2026, letting approved custom content creators sell Maker Packs in The Sims 4 Marketplace, which uses a virtual currency called Moola. EA updated its Marketplace guide on Oct. 5, 2026, with features added since launch.
Will The Sims 5 be on PS5 and Xbox?
That can’t be confirmed until EA announces the game. EA’s January update named PC, console and mobile for its future Sims experiences, without tying specific platforms to any one game.
The Sims 4 shows how wide the series reaches today. The base game is free to play on the EA app for Windows and Mac, Steam, the Epic Games Store, PlayStation and Xbox, and expansion packs and other add-ons cost extra.
