Okami 2 release date: Capcom's sequel has no date or platforms yet

Okami 2 is real, but it isn’t close to a launch date yet. Here’s everything Capcom has confirmed about the sequel and what’s still missing.

When does Okami 2 come out?

Capcom hasn’t announced a release date. There’s no year, no release window and no list of platforms for the Okami sequel.

What Capcom has confirmed is that the game exists. In a press release dated Dec. 13, 2024, the company said work on an Okami sequel project had begun. The project details in that release list only the name “Okami sequel project”, with no genre, platform or date, while the other game in the same announcement got all three.

What Capcom has said about the sequel

Capcom describes the project as the start of a new tale for Okami, with a new adventure for Amaterasu and company. The original, released in 2006, casts you as Amaterasu, who takes the form of a wolf, on a journey to bring life back to a Japanese-style world, with the Celestial Brush at the heart of the controls.

The sequel is being co-developed with the director and members of the development team from the original Okami. Capcom also framed it as part of a push to revive series that haven’t had a new game in years, using its back catalog to make new titles.

Is Okami 2 coming to PS5 or Switch 2?

Neither is confirmed. Capcom hasn’t named a single platform for the sequel, so any PS5, Xbox, PC or Switch 2 version is a guess until it does.

The one thing that is certain is where you can play Okami today. Okami HD came out on Dec. 12, 2017, and is available on PS4, Xbox One, PC and Switch. On Steam it costs $19.99. By June 30, 2026, Okami HD had sold 3.1 million units, and the Okami series 4.8 million, according to Capcom.

What Onimusha tells us about timing

Capcom announced the Okami sequel in the same press release as Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Onimusha was already scheduled for 2026 at that point, and it came out on Sept. 3, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, at $69.99 on Steam.

The Okami sequel was announced at an earlier stage, as a project where work had just begun. Counting from December 2024, it’s now about 22 months into public development. Onimusha went from announcement to launch in about 21 months, but it had a year attached from the start. That’s simple arithmetic, not a Capcom date, and it doesn’t point to a launch window.
