New Smash Bros on Switch 2: Nintendo hasn't announced one, and Ultimate is still the latest game
Nintendo hasn't announced a new Super Smash Bros. game for Switch 2, and there's no Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate either. Ultimate, released on Dec. 7, 2018, is still the latest game in the series and runs on Switch 2 the same way it does on Switch. It has sold 38.14 million copies, and its last new fighter arrived in October 2021.
Switch 2 has been out for more than a year, and it still doesn’t have its own Smash Bros. Here’s what’s official about a new Super Smash Bros. game and how Ultimate works on Switch 2.
Is there a new Smash Bros for Switch 2?
Not yet. Nintendo hasn’t announced a new Super Smash Bros. game, a title or a release date, and leaks and dates shared online aren’t official.
The latest game is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which came out on Switch on Dec. 7, 2018. By simple arithmetic, it turns eight in December 2026. It brought back every fighter in the series' history and has sold 38.14 million copies as of June 30, 2026, which makes it the third best-selling Switch game, after Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
Smash Bros. Ultimate on Switch 2
There’s no Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of Ultimate, the kind of upgraded version Nintendo has made for some Switch hits, and Nintendo hasn’t announced one. The original game still works on the new console: Nintendo lists Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as supported on Switch 2, with game behavior consistent with Switch. It’s $59.99 on the Nintendo US store.
No new fighters since 2021
Ultimate’s downloadable fighters came in two passes. Fighters Pass is $24.99, and Fighters Pass Vol. 2 is $29.99, with each fighter also sold alone as a $5.99 Challenger Pack. The last one, Challenger Pack 11, arrived on Oct. 18, 2021. Nintendo hasn’t announced more fighters since.
What the Smash Bros. director made next
Masahiro Sakurai, the director of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, moved on to Kirby Air Riders, which came out on Switch 2 on Nov. 20, 2025, for $69.99. Nintendo hasn’t said what Sakurai is working on now.
