The latest all-new 3D Mario is Super Mario Odyssey, which came out on Switch on Oct. 27, 2017. It has sold 30.8 million copies as of June 30, 2026, making it the fifth best-selling Switch game. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury followed on Feb. 12, 2021, but it was an expanded version of a Wii U game. What the 3D Mario team made instead
Nintendo’s 3D Mario team made Donkey Kong Bananza. In its Ask the Developer interview, Nintendo said the game came from a request for the team that had been working on 3D Mario games to create a 3D Donkey Kong. Development started on Switch and moved to Switch 2, and the game came out on July 17, 2025, for $69.99. Its paid expansion, DK Island & Emerald Rush, followed on Sept. 12, 2025, for $19.99.
The Mario games Nintendo released instead
Nintendo has filled the gap with older games. Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 came to Switch on Oct. 2, 2025, for $39.99 each or $69.99 together. In 2D, Super Mario Bros. Wonder Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park came out on March 26, 2026, for $79.99, or $19.99 as an upgrade for owners of the 2023 Switch game.
