MW4 multiplayer release date: Oct. 23 at midnight local time, with 12 Core maps, Kill Block and the full list of modes

Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer opens at midnight local time on Oct. 23, with 12 Core maps ready on day one. Here’s when it unlocks, what you can play before that and every map and mode Activision has confirmed for launch.

When does MW4 multiplayer come out?

Multiplayer launches with the full game on Friday, Oct. 23, 2026, at midnight local time, Activision says. It goes live as the clock turns to Oct. 23 wherever you are: midnight ET in New York, midnight CT in Chicago and midnight PT in Los Angeles. It arrives the same night on PS5, Xbox Series X and S, PC through Battle.net, Steam and the Xbox app, and Switch 2. Our MW4 release time page covers the unlock and preload in detail.

What you can play before Oct. 23

Activision runs two early access windows for players who digitally pre-ordered the Standard Digital or Vault Edition. Campaign Early Access opened on Oct. 16 with all 16 missions, and DMZ Early Access starts on Tuesday, Oct. 20 (who gets in). Multiplayer stays closed until launch for everyone, so launch night is the first time it’s playable since the beta.

That beta ran across two weekends: early access from Aug. 21 to 25 and the open beta from Aug. 28 to Sept. 1. Activision says eligible cosmetic beta rewards are tied to your Activision account and unlock in the full game. The 12 Core maps at launch

Multiplayer launches with 12 Core 6v6 maps, each with its own insignia and intro scene. Several follow the campaign’s war across Korea, India, France and New York:

Lotus is a Korean fishing village after an amphibious assault. Silkworm is a dense South Korean shopping district built around a convenience store and a subway entrance. Munition is a North Korean command facility with a munitions depot and hangars, and Sentry is an assault on a North Korean base in a whiteout. Nautical plays out on a burning South Korean ferry at dawn, and Reactor U92 is a Korean reactor complex in meltdown.

Rooftops spreads across the snowy roofs of a New York hotel. Mumbai is a fugitive’s hideout in a dense district around a Victorian market, and Transit 213 is a parking lot of derelict buses in western India. Cachette is a hidden armory on the edge of a French rail terminal, Lithium is a refinery under attack beneath Mexico’s Sierra mountains, and Coal is an old Soviet coal plant in the mountains.

Activision says two more Core maps, both fan favorites, arrive shortly after launch.

Every mode at launch

The respawn modes are Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed and Free for All, plus three new ones: Counter Attack, Hijack and Inflation. In Inflation, every elimination drops a cash bounty, every death leaves part of your cash behind, and the team holding the most cash wins.

The round-based modes are Search and Destroy, Gunfight and the new Gunfight 10v10. For big battles, Ground War brings the new Combat Outpost and other large modes with armored vehicles. The party modes at launch are Gun Game and Drop Zone, with more coming shortly after release. Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed, Free for All and Search and Destroy all launch with Hardcore versions.

Kill Block, the map that rebuilds itself

Kill Block, officially the Westbridge Training Facility, is Infinity Ward’s big new idea. Every match takes place on three linked sections, called Slabs, and the facility swaps them out between matches and rounds. Activision counts more than 500 possible layouts at launch. Most Slabs are new, while some draw on Verdansk and on Shoot House from Modern Warfare (2019).

At launch, Kill Block hosts Gunfight 3v3 and Gunfight 10v10, single-life rounds where every elimination counts. Activision has tested Search and Destroy and Domination there too, and plans more core modes and map combinations after launch.

Progression, Prestige and new gear

Perks return to a Pick 3 system, with Ninja and Quick Fix back at launch. Apex Attachments unlock once you fully level a weapon and can change how it fires, handles or hides. New gear includes the Trip Wire, which links into explosive webs with your squad’s traps, the Smoke Wall drone, Razor Wire and the Bomb Glider Killstreak, and the Riot Shield returns as a Field Upgrade.

At max rank, you choose between two Prestige paths. Classic Prestige resets your level unlocks and Create-a-Class progress for faster XP and exclusive rewards. Regular Prestige restarts you at Level 1 but keeps every unlock, with a smaller set of rewards.

Online play, crossplay and price

Multiplayer, including private matches, needs a constant internet connection, because the game streams textures. On consoles, online play needs PlayStation Plus, Game Pass Essential or Nintendo Switch Online. Squads work across platforms with crossplay, and split-screen multiplayer is available on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S.

Modern Warfare 4 costs $69.99 (every edition), and it won’t join Game Pass until holiday 2027. On Switch 2, it’s a native version built with Digital Legends; our Switch 2 page has the details.

What comes after launch

Activision says Season 1 follows shortly after Oct. 23, and our estimate is Nov. 12 (Season 1 guide).
