Golden Axe remake release date: SEGA's new Golden Axe still has no title, date or platforms

SEGA promised a new Golden Axe in 2023, and the axe still hasn’t dropped. Here’s what’s official.

When does the Golden Axe remake come out?

SEGA hasn’t said. It revealed a new Golden Axe at The Game Awards on Dec. 7, 2023, alongside new Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage and Shinobi projects, and said titles, release dates and platforms would come later. In SEGA SAMMY’s earnings presentation of Aug. 7, 2026, the game is listed as Golden Axe (Title TBD), with its launch date, regions, platforms and delivery format all marked TBD.

It isn’t on SEGA’s release schedule for the fiscal year that ends in March 2027, which closes with Persona 4 Revival on Feb. 18, 2027. SEGA places it under upcoming plans for the years after that, next to Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage and Alien: Isolation 2, none of which has a date. Of the five series SEGA revived in 2023, only Shinobi has come out so far, with Shinobi: Art of Vengeance in August 2025.

Is it a remake, and what will it run on?

SEGA hasn’t said. It described the five projects as part of an effort to reimagine classic series for modern audiences, but it hasn’t shown how closely the new Golden Axe follows the original, so remake is the word fans use rather than an official one.

There’s no platform list either. SEGA’s presentation leaves platforms as TBD, which means a PS5, Xbox Series X and S, Switch 2 or PC version is still unconfirmed, and SEGA hasn’t named a developer.

Can you still play the original Golden Axe?

Not by buying it on Steam. SEGA stopped new sales of its Mega Drive and Genesis Classics bundle and select individual games on Dec. 6, 2024, and Golden Axe and Golden Axe II no longer have a price there. Players who bought them before that date keep them in their libraries.

SEGA’s title screens date the original to 1989 and Golden Axe II to 1991. In the first game, Death Adder seizes the Golden Axe and rules the land of Yuria until three warriors rise to defeat Death Adder, and in the sequel, Dark Guld takes the axe and plunges the world into chaos.

What else has SEGA planned for Golden Axe?

The same presentation lists a second Golden Axe project in SEGA’s animation business, in a section marked as licensing out, the same table that holds the Sonic the Hedgehog 4 film. It has no title or date, and Shinobi, Streets of Rage, Eternal Champions, The House of the Dead and OutRun appear there the same way.
