Dragon Quest 12 release date: no date yet for Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams

Dragon Quest XII has a new name and a fresh start, but no date. Here’s what Square Enix has confirmed, what changed in 2026 and what you can play in the meantime.

When does Dragon Quest 12 come out?

Square Enix hasn’t announced a release date. Its release schedule lists Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams as TBA, with no year, no window and no platforms, and the official site carries an “in development” badge.

The latest word came on Sept. 16, 2026, when Square Enix announced that the Dragon Quest series had passed 100 million units sold. That announcement called Beyond Dreams the next mainline entry and said it’s currently in development, without adding a date.

From The Flames of Fate to Beyond Dreams

Square Enix first announced Dragon Quest XII on May 27, 2021, during a livestream for the series' 35th anniversary. At the time, the game was in the early stages of development, and Square Enix said it planned a global simultaneous release, a first for the series.

Five years later, on May 27, 2026, the series' 40th anniversary, Square Enix said Dragon Quest XII had restarted development under a new structure. The title changed from The Flames of Fate to Beyond Dreams, and the logo was completely redone. A video released the same day had messages from game designer Yuji Horii and executive producer Yosuke Saito, along with in-development gameplay footage.

The official site sums up the new story in one line: a young hero troubled by strange visions while asleep. Square Enix hasn’t attached a release window to the restarted game, and the 2021 plan for a global simultaneous release hasn’t been repeated in its 2026 announcements.

Is Dragon Quest 12 coming to PS5 or Switch 2?

Neither is confirmed. Square Enix hasn’t named a single platform for Beyond Dreams, so PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Switch 2 versions are all unannounced.

Square Enix’s other current Dragon Quest games cover a lot of systems. Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World comes out on Dec. 3, 2026, on Switch 2, Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, at $59.99 on Steam, and Dragon Quest XI S reached Switch 2 on Sept. 24, 2026. That’s a pattern, not a promise for Dragon Quest XII. For the rest of Nintendo’s lineup, see our upcoming Switch 2 games.

Dragon Quest games to play while you wait

The newest full release is Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, a remake of the 2000 game that came out on Feb. 5, 2026, and costs $59.99 on Steam. The last mainline entry, Dragon Quest XI, is on Steam as Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age, Definitive Edition for $39.99, and Square Enix says it has shipped nearly 9 million units.

The HD-2D remakes of Dragon Quest I & II and Dragon Quest III, which together tell the Erdrick trilogy, passed 4 million units combined by May 2026. If you want more from Square Enix next year, Final Fantasy VII Revelation is dated for April 8, 2027, and Kingdom Hearts 4 is due later in 2027.
