SteamOS 3.9 update: Plasma 6.7, Linux 7.2, a Steam Deck idle power fix and every change for Steam Machine and Steam Frame

Valve released SteamOS 3.9 to all users on Oct. 23, 2026, at 6:04 p.m. ET, as version 3.9.5 on the Stable channel. It's the first major SteamOS update since SteamOS 3.8 on June 17, and it updates Desktop Mode from KDE Plasma 6.4.3 to Plasma 6.7.3, rebases the system on Linux 7.2 and an updated Arch Linux base, and cuts idle power use on the Steam Deck when no audio is playing. It also fixes Remote Play on a Steam Machine started without a display, improves support for the Steam Frame wireless adapter, stops Forza Horizon 6 from crashing the Legion Go 2 and fixes Elden Ring and Dark Souls III failing to run on Intel Panther Lake chips. Valve tested it in the Preview channel from Aug. 28.

SteamOS 3.9 is the first major SteamOS release since June, and it reaches every Steam Deck and Steam Machine at once. Here’s what changed, device by device.

When did SteamOS 3.9 come out? Valve pushed SteamOS 3.9.5 to all users on Oct. 23, 2026, at 6:04 p.m. ET. It’s the first major release since SteamOS 3.8 on June 17, and Valve’s notes list every change since then. SteamOS 3.9 reached the Preview channel on Aug. 28 and went through several beta builds before the stable release.

What’s new in SteamOS 3.9. Desktop Mode jumps from KDE Plasma 6.4.3 to Plasma 6.7.3, three Plasma releases in one update. The system moves to an updated Arch Linux base and the Linux 7.2 kernel, and an updated bootloader works with more motherboards, which matters for people installing SteamOS on their own PCs.

Valve also switched the default Wi-Fi backend to wpa_supplicant, for better compatibility with Wi-Fi networks, and added fast reconnection after sleep, which only the previous iwd backend had. Hidden Wi-Fi networks no longer fail on the first connection attempt.

The headline for Deck owners is lower idle power use when no audio is playing. Across SteamOS, Valve also fixed lost input when a launcher window gets dragged in Game Mode, a bug where changing the time zone blocked Desktop Mode until a reboot, and the Disable Frame Limiter toggle, which didn’t work with VRR enabled. Frame limits no longer drop below the intended frame rate on certain external displays.

SteamOS 3.9 adds preliminary hibernation support, but it’s hidden from the Game Mode menus and stays off on the Steam Deck until Valve fixes a driver bug. The Desktop Mode lock screen can be switched on in settings, and it remains off by default.

Valve sells both through reservation queues, as our Steam Machine price and release date and Steam Frame price pages explain.

SteamOS 3.9 fixes a system crash when launching Forza Horizon 6 on the Legion Go 2 and adds preliminary brightness control for it. ELDEN RING and DARK SOULS III no longer fail to run on recent Intel Panther Lake processors, and a boot screen glitch on Intel PTL and newer devices is gone. Valve worked around a firmware issue on some ASUS devices that sent fan speeds high after waking from sleep, fixed suspend and resume on PCs with RDNA1 and RDNA2 graphics cards, fixed GPU errors in The Crew Motorfest and fixed audio issues when plugging in certain monitors on multi-monitor setups.

Every device on the Stable channel gets SteamOS 3.9.5 as a free system update, found under System in Settings. The Steam Deck itself costs $789 for the 512GB OLED model, as our Steam Deck price page shows.

This page is updated as soon as Valve ships the next SteamOS 3.9 patch or enables hibernation on the Steam Deck.
