Google Play now runs apps you make with AI, no developer account needed

Google Play now lets you build your own Android app with AI and run it on your phone without a developer account. Google announced the change on Oct. 13, along with Game Finder, a game recommendation tool built on what it calls your Gamer DNA, 48-hour Sprint challenges and more PC games on Play. Play Fest, Google Play's sale and sweepstakes week, runs until Oct. 19.

Google Play now runs apps you build yourself with AI. In an announcement on Oct. 13, Google said you can vibe code a custom Android app in Google AI Studio and launch it on your own device through Google Play, with just a standard Google account and no developer account. The same update adds Game Finder, new social features for players, more PC games and Play Fest deals through Oct. 19.

Your own app, without the store

Google’s pitch is that many AI-made apps start as personal projects. Through Google Play, they now stay private, secure and separate from the public catalog. The feature started rolling out on Oct. 13 in select markets, including the US, for users 18 and over. In the coming months, you will be able to share a personal app with a close circle of friends and family. If you want to release it to everyone, Google Play moves you to a professional developer account, and the app goes through the same Trust & Safety reviews and quality standards as any other.

Game Finder and Gamer DNA. Google says players judge games by mechanics, art style and more, not just popularity. Game Finder draws on Google Play’s community of more than 2 billion players and on your Gamer DNA, an analysis of how you play and what you tell it you like. You can tune it with specific games, genres and mechanics, see how players with a similar Gamer DNA engage with a game, how many people you follow play it, summaries of user reviews and why a game is trending. It is rolling out in English to US users, with more markets later.

For playing with others, Sprints match you with groups of two to five players for 48-hour contests, and Community Posts let you ask and answer questions on a game’s page in any language, with automatic translation. Sidekick, Google Play’s in-game overlay, now records 30-second Playbacks on select devices.

More PC games and Play Fest. Google is bringing PC hits like Dave the Diver and Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun to Google Play, with REPLACED, Chosen by Odin and Over the Hill coming in the next few months, all playable on Android phones and PC with cloud saves. Game Trials, which let you play full premium games for a limited time before buying, are expanding from mobile to PC games. Outside the phone, the Play Store now adapts to screens in cars with Google built-in, becomes a 3D space on XR headsets and highlights large-screen apps on Googlebook.

Play Fest runs until Oct. 19: Play Points multipliers on purchases, deals across apps, games, books and gift cards, leagues in Angry Birds 2, Free Fire and 8 Ball Pool with up to 50,000 Play Points per league, and a sweepstakes you enter with Play Points. Books get a 15x points multiplier from Oct. 16 to 18.

This page is updated as soon as Google expands personal apps, Game Finder or Play Fest to new markets.
