Silksong Sea of Sorrow release date: Team Cherry still says 2026, but there's no day yet

There’s no release date for Silksong’s first expansion yet. Team Cherry promised Sea of Sorrow for 2026, and with about 11 weeks left in the year, the studio still hasn’t said when, or shown more than its first teaser.

When is Silksong Sea of Sorrow coming out?

Team Cherry announced Hollow Knight: Silksong - Sea of Sorrow on Dec. 15, 2025, in a holiday post and a short teaser. It said work on the expansion was well underway and that it was coming next year, which means 2026.

Since then, the studio hasn’t posted anything about it. Its last Silksong news was Patch 5 in March 2026, which added a Traditional Chinese translation, updated the German script and fixed bugs. Steam doesn’t have a Sea of Sorrow page yet, and the only add-on listed for Silksong is the soundtrack.

That silence fits what Team Cherry said in its announcement: it’s keeping details secret and will share more shortly before Sea of Sorrow comes out. The other 2026 promise in the same post, an upgraded Hollow Knight for Switch 2, arrived in early February, along with PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions.

What Team Cherry has shown so far

The teaser and the announcement are all there is. Sea of Sorrow is a nautically themed expansion in which Hornet voyages across and beneath “salt-stricken seas,” and Team Cherry promises new areas, bosses, tools and more.

Team Cherry calls it Silksong’s first big expansion, and it has said it has more plans for 2026 that it’s keeping under wraps. It hasn’t said how big Sea of Sorrow is, where you enter it or whether you need to finish the main game first.

Is Sea of Sorrow free, and where can you play it?

Yes, it’s free for all players of Hollow Knight: Silksong, Team Cherry says. You won’t need to buy anything beyond the base game.

Silksong itself costs $19.99 on Steam, for PC, Mac and Linux. It’s also on PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, and on Xbox, where it’s included with Game Pass. Team Cherry hasn’t listed platforms for the expansion separately, but its promise covers all Silksong players. By December 2025, more than seven million people had bought Silksong, plus millions more who played it on Game Pass.

When Team Cherry could announce the date

There’s no event on the calendar where Team Cherry has promised news. The biggest showcase left this year is The Game Awards on Dec. 10, covered on our Game Awards 2026 page. Nintendo hasn’t scheduled its next Direct yet, and our next Nintendo Direct page tracks when it’s announced.

Team Cherry has also announced Silksong news on its own, through its blog and Steam, so a date could come without a showcase. Going by the studio’s own words, the gap between that announcement and the release should be short.
