Square Enix’s first HD-2D Final Fantasy pairs a new band of knights with the series' biggest heroes. Here’s every main character in Final Fantasy Resonance, who voices them and how the 26 Visions work.

Who are the main characters in Final Fantasy Resonance?

Square Enix’s official site lists nine characters. The story starts in Grandshelt, the Kingdom of Knights, where the airship commander Rain and the deputy commander Lasswell investigate the Earth Shrine, whose magical barrier has weakened. In the innermost chamber, a man in black armor, Veritas of the Dark, defeats them and shatters the Earth Crystal. To protect the remaining Crystals, the two set out after Veritas, joined by Fina, a mysterious girl they meet in Grandshelt.

Along the way, the cast grows with Nichol, Lid, Jake, Sakura and a nameless woman who travels with Bahamut. The game adapts and enhances the story of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, the mobile RPG, as the first Final Fantasy in the HD-2D style. Our Final Fantasy Resonance release date page has the platforms and editions.

Rain, Lasswell and Fina

Rain is the main protagonist, an exceptionally skilled knight entrusted with Grandshelt’s airship squadron at a young age. Earnest and principled, Rain refuses to pick one side over another, even in dire situations, and carries complicated feelings about a father, Raegen, who left the family and disappeared without a trace. Clifford Chapin voices Rain in English, and Nobuhiko Okamoto in Japanese.

Lasswell matches Rain’s skill and serves as deputy commander. Orphaned young and raised by Rain’s family, Lasswell is serious, disciplined and trusted by soldiers and superiors alike, and often gets dragged along by Rain’s impulses. In battle, Lasswell is a Breaker, a role built to stagger enemies. Alejandro Saab and Yusuke Kobayashi provide the voices.

Fina appears from the Earth Crystal with no memories except a name. Cheerful and pure-hearted, Fina excels at white magic and archery and can talk with espers, without knowing where those skills came from. Lizzie Freeman and Akane Fujita voice Fina.

Veritas of the Dark and the woman with Bahamut

Veritas of the Dark is one of the Sworn Six of Paladia. Veritas destroys the Earth Crystal, attacks Grandshelt and schemes to annihilate every Crystal in the world. Ian Sinclair voices the villain in English, and Akio Otsuka in Japanese.

The official site keeps one name hidden behind question marks. This mysterious woman travels with Bahamut, fights mainly with offensive magic and carries a deep enmity toward Veritas. Playful on the surface and quick to tease Rain, the character hides a firm resolve. Square Enix lists Corey Pettit and Inori Minase as the voices.

Nichol, Lid, Jake and Sakura

Nichol is a strategist for the Olderion Federation, raised by a family of Wardens of the Waters, the longtime guardians of the Water Shrine. Tactical and objective, Nichol still gets roped into the group’s antics. Khoi Dao and Tsubasa Yonaga provide the voices.

Lid is an airship engineer from Dirnado who has worked at the family forge since first holding a wrench, and a contender to become the next Cid, the title for the top engineer in Dilmagia. Lid fights alongside Mechabo, a mechanical chocobo of Lid’s own design, with a damage-dealing Commando skill set. Elsie Lovelock and Ayaka Ohashi voice Lid.

Jake leads the rebel army against the Zoldaad Empire. Breezy on the surface and devoted to freeing the people from the empire, Jake fights with luck-based skills such as Coin Toss and Gamble Shot, voiced by Jonah Scott and Yoshimasa Hosoya. Sakura is a sage of Mysidia, the magiapolis, who looks like a young girl but speaks like an ancient soul. Sakura’s magical power outclasses other mages, and where Sakura truly comes from is a mystery. Ama Lee and Aoi Yuki voice Sakura.

The 26 Visions

Visions are echoes of beloved Final Fantasy characters, and the PlayStation Blog’s hands-on with the final game counts 26 of them across the adventure. Confirmed Visions include Cloud and Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII, Terra from VI, Zidane from IX, Lightning from XIII, Noctis from XV and the original Warrior of Light from the first Final Fantasy. A few come from Brave Exvius itself, such as the Black Mage Tronn and the Medic Leah. Each legacy Vision comes with animations, attacks and music from its original game.

You find Visions at crystal shrines around the world of Lapis. Each shrine tells a short tale of a past hero with video clips and multiple-choice questions about that Vision, and finishing it awakens the Vision as a companion.

How Visions work in battle

You equip each Vision to a party member. It adds magic and physical attacks and permanently raises stats such as health and speed. Noctis, for example, starts with a 20% attack boost and Thunder or Blizzard, then unlocks a 40% boost to the limit burst gauge for each defeated enemy as it earns mastery points. Zidane unlocks Steal and later Mug, which adds damage to a theft attempt. The more a character uses a Vision, the higher their affinity climbs, and magicite brought to the Moogle of Light raises each Vision’s base rank.

Every Vision has a role, such as Breaker or Saboteur, so pairings build specialists or all-rounders: Medic Leah gives Lasswell healing magic and the option to pass a turn to an ally, while Cloud, another Breaker, makes Lasswell hit harder. Stagger every enemy in a fight and you can trigger a Vision’s cinematic Resonance finisher, such as Cloud’s Ascension. Espers are separate: traditional summons that join a battle for a set number of turns.

When you can meet them
