Xbox Series X sales: Microsoft doesn't publish the numbers, and its console revenue fell 33% in early 2026
Microsoft doesn't publish how many Xbox Series X and S consoles it has sold, so there's no official total as of Oct. 18, 2026. What it does report is the change in Xbox hardware revenue from a year earlier, and that fell 29% from July to September 2025, 32% from October to December 2025 and 33% from January to March 2026, each time because fewer consoles were sold, according to Microsoft. Its April to June 2026 results didn't give a separate hardware figure, but total Xbox revenue fell 10%, and Microsoft expects hardware revenue to decline again from July to September 2026. It reports those results on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2026, with its earnings call at 5:30 p.m. ET. For comparison, Sony has shipped more than 95 million PS5 consoles and Nintendo has sold 23.68 million Switch 2 consoles. In the US, the Xbox Series X costs $799.99 after Microsoft's second price increase in less than a year, on Aug. 1, 2026.
- Xbox Series X|S

Microsoft has never said how many Xbox Series X and S consoles it has sold. Here’s what its results do show, how that compares with the PS5 and the Switch 2 and when the next numbers come.
How many Xbox Series X consoles have been sold?
There’s no official number. Microsoft doesn’t publish unit sales for the Xbox Series X and S, which went on sale on Nov. 10, 2020, at $499 and $299. In its quarterly results, it reports only how much Xbox hardware revenue rose or fell compared with a year earlier, along with revenue from Xbox games and services.
Those results point one way. Microsoft’s Xbox hardware revenue fell 33% from January to March 2026, and Microsoft said the drop was driven by lower volume of consoles sold.
Xbox hardware revenue by quarter
The declines go back to 2024. Xbox hardware revenue fell 31% from January to March 2024, 42% from April to June 2024, 29% from July to September 2024 and 29% from October to December 2024, then only 6% from January to March 2025. For its whole fiscal year from July 2024 to June 2025, Microsoft reported a 25% drop, after 13% the year before.

The slide picked up again with 29% from July to September 2025 and 32% in the 2025 holiday quarter, before the 33% drop in early 2026. For April to June 2026, Microsoft’s release and earnings call didn’t give a separate hardware figure, but total Xbox revenue fell 10%, Xbox content and services revenue fell 10%, and the quarter included impairment charges in the Xbox business.
Xbox Series X sales vs PS5 and Switch 2
Sony had shipped more than 95 million PS5 consoles as of June 30, 2026, and Nintendo had sold 23.68 million Switch 2 consoles by the same date, about 13 months after launch. Both companies publish unit numbers every quarter, so the Xbox is the only one of the three without an official count. Our PS5 sales and Switch 2 sales pages have their figures.

Why Xbox console sales are falling
Microsoft has tied the drops to lower volume of consoles sold. Over the same stretch, it raised US console prices twice: by $20 to $70 in October 2025, and by $100 for 512GB models and $150 for 1TB models on Aug. 1, 2026, blaming memory and storage costs. The Xbox Series X costs $799.99, the Digital Edition $749.99 and the Series S from $499.99, as our Xbox Series X price page explains.

On its July earnings call, Microsoft said it was making decisions across its games, platform and operations to reset the Xbox business, and that it expects Xbox to return to growth in its fiscal year that runs from July 2026 to June 2027. The next console, Project Helix, has no release date or price, and our Xbox Helix page tracks it.
When Microsoft reports Xbox results next
Microsoft releases its results for July to September 2026 on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2026, and holds its earnings call at 2:30 p.m. PT, or 5:30 p.m. ET. In July, it said it expects Xbox hardware revenue to decline from a year earlier and Xbox content and services revenue to fall in the mid-single digits.
That quarter includes the first two months at the new prices. The holiday quarter, with the $899.99 Xbox Series X25 Limited Edition on Nov. 13, comes in Microsoft’s next report, and our Xbox Black Friday 2026 page tracks the deals.
