Touchscreen MacBook Pro release date: Apple reveal Oct. 28 and sale Nov. 6, reports say

Apple hasn't announced a MacBook Pro with a touchscreen, and its events page lists no event. Reports say Apple will show its first touchscreen Mac, a MacBook Pro with an OLED display, on Oct. 28 in Los Angeles, and that it goes on sale on Friday, Nov. 6. The same reports say it keeps the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips of the current model and is sold alongside it as a pricier option.

Apple’s first touchscreen Mac could arrive this fall. Apple hasn’t announced it, but reports say a MacBook Pro with an OLED touchscreen will be shown on Oct. 28 and go on sale on Nov. 6. Here’s what’s reported, what Apple sells now and what it could cost.

When is the touchscreen MacBook Pro coming out?

Apple hasn’t announced a touchscreen Mac. Its newsroom has no Mac news since the Mac mini and Mac Studio went on sale on Sept. 22, and its events page lists no upcoming event as of Oct. 18.

The dates come from a business news reporter who covers Apple and cites people familiar with its plans:

  1. Oct. 8He reported that Apple planned to announce its first touchscreen MacBook on Oct. 27.
  2. Oct. 12He said Apple planned a two-day experience for creators in Los Angeles on Oct. 27 and 28, not a traditional livestreamed event.
  3. Oct. 15He said Apple had begun inviting media to an all-day product launch experience in Los Angeles on Wednesday, Oct. 28.
  4. He also said Apple stores have a big floor reset planned for the evening of Thursday, Nov. 5, which could mean the new Macs go on sale on Friday, Nov. 6.

None of this is confirmed. The same reporter said in April that supply problems could push the laptop into early 2027, and the date has already moved by a day. If Apple sends a press release instead of holding an event, the date could change again.

For everything else Apple could show that week, see our Apple October event 2026 page.

What Apple is reportedly launching

The touchscreen model is expected to be a new, pricier MacBook Pro, not a new product line. Reports describe:

  • OLED touchscreens in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes, replacing the mini-LED display used since 2021.
  • A hole-punch camera in place of the notch, with a Dynamic Island around it, like on the iPhone.
  • A lighter body, though not the much thinner design that earlier reports described.
  • A reinforced hinge, so the screen doesn’t wobble when you tap it.
  • The full keyboard and large trackpad stay. It’s a laptop with a touchscreen, not a tablet.

The current mini-LED MacBook Pro is expected to stay on sale below it. On the same day, the reporter expects an entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 in the current design, an iMac with M6 and an iPad mini with an OLED screen. For those, see our pages on the MacBook Pro M6 and the iPad mini 8.

Which chips it will have

Reports say the touchscreen model keeps the M5 Pro and M5 Max, the chips Apple put in the current MacBook Pro on March 3, 2026. The reporter says Apple changed its plan in June: earlier reports said the redesign would come with M6 Pro and M6 Max chips, but Apple chose to keep the schedule with M5.

Apple’s specs for those chips are public. Both have an up-to-18-core CPU, with 6 super cores and 12 performance cores. M5 Pro takes up to 64GB of memory and starts with 1TB of storage. M5 Max has up to a 40-core GPU, up to 128GB of memory and 2TB of storage to start.

M6, Apple’s first 2-nanometer chip, is so far only in the Mac mini, from $899. Apple hasn’t announced M6 Pro or M6 Max.

How much will the touchscreen MacBook Pro cost?

Expected price: from about $2,799 for the 14-inch and about $3,299 for the 16-inch, our estimate. Apple hasn’t announced prices.

Our estimate is $300 above the current MacBook Pro with M5 Pro. The reporter expects the touchscreen model to cost a few hundred dollars more than current models. Apple did something similar with the iPad: when the iPad Pro moved to OLED in May 2024, the 11-inch model started at $999, up from $799 for the model before it.

Here’s what the current MacBook Pro costs on Apple’s US store on Oct. 18:

  • 14-inch with M5: $1,999.
  • 14-inch with M5 Pro: $2,499, up from $2,199 when Apple announced it in March.
  • 16-inch with M5 Pro: $2,999, up from $2,699.
  • 14-inch with M5 Max: $4,099.
  • 16-inch with M5 Max: $4,399.

What an OLED screen would change

OLED pixels make their own light, so black areas are switched off rather than lit from behind. The current MacBook Pro uses mini-LED, with small LEDs behind an LCD panel, which Apple calls Liquid Retina XDR. It reaches up to 1,600 nits of peak HDR brightness.

Apple already uses tandem OLED, two OLED layers stacked to combine their light, in the iPad Pro. It introduced it on May 7, 2024, as the Ultra Retina XDR display, rated at 1,000 nits full-screen and 1,600 nits peak for HDR. Reports say the MacBook Pro gets the same kind of panel, which is thinner and uses less power than mini-LED.

Will macOS work with touch?

Apple hasn’t announced touch support for macOS. But code for touch gestures in Safari, Photos, Notes and Quick Look has been spotted in Apple’s macOS 27.2 beta, which could be the version the new laptop ships with.

Reports say macOS will enlarge menus and buttons when you touch the screen and switch back to its usual size when you use the trackpad or a mouse. Tapping, scrolling and zooming are expected to work like on an iPad.

Why Apple took so long

For years, Apple said touch doesn’t suit a laptop. At an Apple event in October 2010, Steve Jobs said Apple had tested touch screens on laptops and that holding your arm up to a vertical screen gets tiring.

Apple’s answer in 2016 was the Touch Bar, a thin touch strip above the keyboard, which Apple announced with the MacBook Pro on Oct. 27, 2016. A touchscreen MacBook Pro would be the first Mac you can touch directly.

FAQ

When is the touchscreen MacBook Pro coming out?

Apple hasn’t announced it. A business news reporter who covers Apple, citing people familiar with its plans, says Apple will show it on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2026, in Los Angeles, and that it could go on sale on Friday, Nov. 6. Earlier, the same reporter said Oct. 27. A delay into early 2027 was possible as recently as April, he said.

Is there an Apple event in October 2026?

Apple hasn’t announced one, and its events page lists no event as of Oct. 18. The reporter says Apple has begun inviting media to an all-day product launch experience in Los Angeles on Oct. 28 for creators and press, rather than a classic livestreamed keynote. Apple’s last announcements, on Oct. 13, were made by press release.

How much will the touchscreen MacBook Pro cost?

Expected price: from about $2,799 for the 14-inch and about $3,299 for the 16-inch, our estimate. Apple hasn’t announced prices. The reporter expects a few hundred dollars more than the current MacBook Pro, which starts at $2,499 for the 14-inch with M5 Pro and $2,999 for the 16-inch on Apple’s US store. When Apple moved the iPad Pro to OLED in 2024, the 11-inch model went from $799 to $999.

Will the touchscreen MacBook Pro have an OLED display?

That’s what reports say. Both sizes are said to switch from the mini-LED Liquid Retina XDR display to tandem OLED, the two-layer OLED panel Apple first used in the iPad Pro in May 2024. Apple says tandem OLED combines the light of two OLED panels for more brightness.

What chip will the touchscreen MacBook Pro have?

Reports say the M5 Pro and M5 Max, the same chips Apple put in the current MacBook Pro in March 2026. The reporter says Apple dropped plans for M6 Pro and M6 Max in this model to keep its schedule. Apple hasn’t announced M6 Pro or M6 Max.

Will Apple stop selling the current MacBook Pro?

Reports say no. The touchscreen OLED models are expected to sit above the current mini-LED MacBook Pro as a higher-end option. The reporter also expects an entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 in the current design.

Will it be called MacBook Ultra?

Probably not. The reporter suggested the name MacBook Ultra earlier this year, then said the models would stay in the MacBook Pro line. Apple hasn’t named anything.

Does macOS support touch?

Not yet. Apple hasn’t announced touch support for macOS. Code with touch gestures for Safari, Photos, Notes and Quick Look has been spotted in Apple’s macOS 27.2 beta, and reports say menus and buttons get larger when you touch the screen and shrink back when you use the trackpad.

Will the MacBook Air get a touchscreen?

Not soon, reports say. Touch is expected only in the higher-end MacBook Pro for now, with the MacBook Air and MacBook Neo staying without it.

Why didn't Macs have touchscreens before?

Apple long said touch doesn’t suit a laptop. At an Apple event in October 2010, Steve Jobs said Apple had tested touch screens on laptops and that holding your arm up to a vertical screen gets tiring. In 2016, Apple added the Touch Bar, a thin touch strip above the keyboard, to the MacBook Pro instead.
