iPad mini 8 release date: not announced, and the current iPad mini now starts at $599

Apple hasn’t announced an iPad mini 8. There’s no release date, price or spec sheet for a new model, and Apple’s October announcements this week didn’t include an iPad. The iPad mini you can buy today is the one Apple released two years ago, and it now costs $100 more than it did at launch.

Has Apple announced the iPad mini 8?

No. As of Oct. 16, 2026, Apple’s US store sells one iPad mini, the iPad mini with A17 Pro, and Apple hasn’t confirmed a new model or a date.

This week was the most recent chance. On Oct. 13, Apple announced the new Apple TV 4K, a new HomePod mini, Apple HomeView and a line of Apple Home Collection accessories, all covered in our Apple October event roundup. None of it was an iPad.

The iPad mini you can buy now

Apple announced the current iPad mini on Oct. 15, 2024, and it went on sale on Oct. 23, 2024. It runs on the A17 Pro chip and was built for Apple Intelligence, with a 2x faster Neural Engine than the model before it.

It keeps the 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display and adds support for Apple Pencil Pro. Other upgrades were Wi-Fi 6E and a USB-C port up to 2x faster, at up to 10Gbps. It comes in blue, purple, starlight and space gray.

IPad mini price: $599 now, $499 at launch

The iPad mini launched at $499 for 128GB, which Apple pitched as double the storage of the previous generation. On Apple’s US store today, the same model costs $599 for 128GB, $699 for 256GB and $899 for 512GB with Wi-Fi. Cellular models start at $749.

That puts the iPad mini $150 above the regular iPad, which Apple lists from $449, and $150 below the iPad Air, from $749.

When could a new iPad mini come out?

Apple hasn’t said, and it doesn’t update the iPad mini on a fixed schedule. The two most recent models came about three years apart. Apple announced the redesigned iPad mini with an 8.3-inch screen on Sept. 14, 2021, and released it on Sept. 24, 2021. The A17 Pro model followed in October 2024.
