The next God of War is four months away, and it doesn’t star Kratos. Here’s what’s coming and what Sony has said about the rest.
The next God of War is Laufey
God of War Laufey comes out on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2027, only on PS5. Sony calls it a new mainline entry in the series, made by Santa Monica Studio, the team behind God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök. It costs $69.99, and pre-orders opened on Sept. 29, 2026.
Our God of War Laufey release date guide has the editions, the $149.99 Collector Box and the pre-order bonus.
Is Kratos in the next God of War?
You play as Faye, also called Laufey, Kratos' wife and Atreus' mother, whose ashes the two carried across God of War (2018). In Sony’s story setup, Faye wakes up after the funeral and finds that the plans put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus are at risk.
Kratos does appear in Sony’s official screenshots, including one where Faye faces Kratos in a hall by a burning hearth. Sony hasn’t said how big the role is or whether Kratos is ever playable.
Is the next God of War set in Egypt?
Not exactly. Laufey takes place in the Everywhen, which Sony describes as the afterlife of the gods, where gods from different mythologies fight for power. Two of the gods Faye meets are Sekhmet, the lion goddess of Egyptian myth, and Begtse, and neither is friendly.
So Egyptian mythology is part of it, but Sony hasn’t announced a God of War set only in Egypt.
The newest God of War you can play now
The most recent release is God of War Sons of Sparta, out on PS5 since Feb. 12, 2026, for $29.99. It’s a 2D, pixel-art prequel from Mega Cat Studios, made with Santa Monica Studio, and it casts you as a young, devout Kratos who doesn’t yet know the truth about being a demigod.
What comes after Laufey
Sony hasn’t announced anything after Laufey. The recent mainline gaps are long: God of War (2018) came out on April 20, 2018, Ragnarök on Nov. 9, 2022, about four and a half years later, and Laufey lands about four years and three months after Ragnarök. If the next one took as long again, it would arrive around 2031. That’s arithmetic from past releases, not a date from Sony.
This page is updated as soon as Sony announces the next God of War game after Laufey.
