SNK’s newest Fatal Fury lands on Nintendo’s console on Oct. 22 at a budget price. Here’s when it comes out on Switch 2, what each edition costs and which fighters you get.

When does Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves come out on Switch 2?

Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026. SNK releases the Switch 2 version digitally on the Nintendo eShop, where pre-orders are open and both editions list Oct. 22 as the release date. The game is rated Teen by the ESRB and PEGI 12 in Europe.

A boxed copy comes later. SNK releases a physical Starter Edition on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2027, in Japan, with pre-orders at participating retailers, and gives release details for other regions separately. The Japanese box art is the only packaging SNK has shown.

Price and editions

The Standard Edition costs $19.99 and contains the base game only. The Starter Edition costs $29.99 and adds every fighter from Season Passes 1 to 3, plus their extra stages. That’s 18 characters for $10 more, the best deal for anyone starting fresh on Switch 2. The eShop also sells each of those fighters separately, so Standard owners can pick only the characters they want.

The Switch 2 price matches PC: the base game costs $19.99 on Steam on Oct. 21, 2026. SNK lists the physical Starter Edition price as to be announced. Expected price: about $39.99 for the physical Starter Edition in the US, our estimate, since boxed Switch 2 releases cost more to make than the $29.99 digital version.

Every fighter in the Starter Edition

Season Pass 1 brings Andy Bogard, Ken and Chun-Li from Street Fighter, Joe Higashi and Mr. Big. Season Pass 2 adds Kim Jae Hoon, Nightmare Geese, Blue Mary, Wolfgang Krauser, Mr. Karate and Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star.

Season Pass 3 has seven fighters: Rick Strowd, Duck King and Kim Kaphwan, then Manjiro “Mikey” Sano and Ken “Draken” Ryuguji from Tokyo Revengers in October, Laocorn from Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture in November and Reina from Tekken 8 in December. Nintendo’s listing schedules Laocorn and the final fighter for release by Dec. 31, 2026, and Season 3 also adds new stages. Reina’s arrival returns a favor: Geese Howard joined Tekken 7 as a guest fighter.

Pre-order bonus: classic Mai

Digital pre-orders on the eShop come with Mai Shiranui’s classic costume, the trademark kunoichi-style outfit, instead of the riding leathers Mai wears in City of the Wolves. On Switch 2, the costume is also a bonus for early buyers of the physical version and goes on sale as a paid DLC on Jan. 21, 2027, so a digital pre-order is the fastest way to get it.

On PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X and S, Steam and the Epic Games Store, the classic Mai costume costs $2.99 from Oct. 22. SNK also releases a classic Terry Bogard costume, with the red cap and vest, at $2.99 on the same day.

Crossplay, online and controls

Nintendo’s eShop listing tags the Switch 2 version with cross-platform play, and SNK backs the game’s online mode with rollback netcode. Up to 12 players can join online, and two players can fight on one console. Online play requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership, which also covers Save Data Cloud backups.

The Switch 2 version runs in TV, tabletop and handheld modes. You pick between two control schemes: Arcade Style with traditional inputs, and Smart Style, which turns special moves and combos into single button presses for newcomers. The REV System is the game’s signature mechanic, a meter of offensive options such as REV Arts, REV Accel and REV Blows that overheats when you push it too far.

For solo players, Episodes of South Town is an RPG mode where your fighter takes on challengers under special rules, earns XP and builds a kit of skills. The eShop listing notes that you need to connect to the internet and update the game before playing it.

Is there a demo?

SNK released a free demo on Sept. 30, 2026, on the platforms where the game was already out. It includes six fighters, Rock, Terry, Hotaru, Preecha, Vox and Mai, and the Arcade, Classic Versus, Training, Tutorial, Trial and Color Edit modes. Nintendo’s Switch 2 listing doesn’t include a demo, so the $19.99 Standard Edition is the entry point on Nintendo’s console.

A fighting game with an esports scene

City of the Wolves is one of the 16 games at the Esports Nations Cup, and it headlines SNK’s own SNK World Championship 2026, whose finals run Nov. 27 to 29 in Sweden with a $4.2 million total prize pool across five SNK games. The Switch 2 version opens that scene to Nintendo players, and crossplay puts them in the same online lobbies as everyone else.
