Grok 5 release date: xAI hasn't released it, and Grok 4.7 is its newest model
Grok 5 isn't out, and xAI hasn't announced a release date for it. As of Oct. 16, 2026, xAI's newest model is Grok 4.7, which it released on the xAI API on Sept. 21, 2026. That came after Grok 4.6 on Aug. 12, Grok 4.5 on July 8 and Grok 4.20 on March 10, so xAI has kept shipping 4-series updates this year instead of moving to Grok 5. No. xAI hasn’t released Grok 5 and hasn’t announced a release date. Its developer documentation lists Grok 4.7 as the newest model, released on the xAI API on Sept. 21, 2026. Elon Musk has posted about Grok 5 on X, but xAI hasn’t put a date in any of its release notes.
Grok 4.7, the newest model
xAI describes Grok 4.7 as its frontier model for coding, agent tasks and knowledge work. It has a 500k-token context window, takes text and images in and writes text out, with no output limit. On the API, it costs $2 per million input tokens, $0.50 per million cached tokens and $6 per million output tokens for prompts under 200k tokens, and $4, $1 and $12 above that.
How fast xAI has been shipping
Instead of jumping to Grok 5, xAI has kept updating the 4 series all year. Grok 4.20 and Grok 4.20 Multi-agent went live on March 10, 2026. Grok 4.5 followed on July 8, reaching EU users on July 17, then Grok 4.6 on Aug. 12 and Grok 4.7 on Sept. 21. On Oct. 14, xAI also released Grok Voice 3.0 for speech-to-speech.
That’s four new 4-series models in about six months, but none of them is called Grok 5.
What to watch next
