Price: $59.99 digital, $69.99 physical

Nintendo’s US store lists the digital version at $59.99 and the physical edition at $69.99. The first physical print run comes in special packaging with textured foil cover art, while supplies last. Nintendo has not announced a deluxe or collector’s edition.

What’s new in the remake

Nintendo says the game was remade with visuals overhauled down to the textures of each material, faster loading, smoother performance, refreshed sound and symphonic orchestral music. The biggest changes, in Nintendo’s own list:

Link plays Zelda's Lullaby on the ocarina, with the song's notes shown on screen

  • Freer movementJump and run with new button commands, and steer the camera with the Right Stick.
  • A talkative HyruleCharacters are fully voiced in expanded cutscenes and have much more to say.
  • Time keeps movingThe day/night cycle now runs everywhere, even in towns.
  • Threads of TimeCheck your story progress and next objective at any moment, while a large tapestry fills in as you play.
  • Hall of Fallen HeroesStatues of the monsters you have beaten, where you can read about them or fight them again.
  • A real ocarinaHum a song Link has learned, or play it on an actual instrument, and the Switch 2 microphone hears it and Link performs it in the game.

The story is the one players know: Ganondorf is after the Triforce in the Sacred Realm, and young Link, with his fairy Navi, travels across two eras of Hyrule to stop him.

Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 and accessories

The anniversary Switch 2 has a black-and-gold dock with the Triforce symbol and green-and-gold Joy-Con 2 controllers. For comparison, Nintendo’s US store lists the standard Switch 2 at $499.99. Nintendo is also releasing a playable ocarina later this year; it has not announced its price.

The two new amiibo unlock special in-game masks in a retro graphical style, and Nintendo says existing Zelda amiibo also give useful rewards when tapped during play.

ZELDA NOTES on your phone

Ocarina of Time joins ZELDA NOTES in the Nintendo Switch App. It adds a daily record of your progress, Gossip Quest (find in-game places from hint images), a virtual ocarina you can play on the touchscreen and share songs from by QR code, and a daily quiz with more than 2,000 questions.

More Zelda this year and next

The game is the centerpiece of the series' 40th anniversary. A concert tour starts in North America in Chicago in February 2027, and the live-action film The Legend of Zelda opens in theaters worldwide on April 30, 2027. Ocarina of Time lands 13 days after Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on Oct. 23 and two weeks before GTA 6 on Nov. 19.
