PS6 release date: Sony has not announced one, but it is spending on the next PlayStation
Sony has not announced a release date, a price or even a name for the PlayStation 6. What it has put on the record is spending: its forecast for the fiscal year that ends March 31, 2027, includes higher investment in what Sony calls its "next-generation platform," and that investment already showed up in PlayStation's costs from April to June 2026. Meanwhile, the PS5 has gotten more expensive, not cheaper. It costs $649.99 in the US since April 2, 2026, and the PS5 Pro costs $899.99.

Sony has not announced the PlayStation 6. There is no release date, no price and no official name. What Sony has confirmed is that it is spending more on its next console: its forecast for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2027, includes “an increase in investments for the next-generation platform,” and that investment already added to PlayStation’s costs from April to June 2026. Until Sony says more, the newest PlayStation you can buy is the PS5 Pro at $899.99.

The only official signal about the next PlayStation is in Sony’s financial reports. On May 8, 2026, reporting results for the year that ended in March, Sony said PlayStation’s operating income forecast for the current fiscal year was essentially flat compared with last year, excluding one-time items, “due to the incorporation of an increase in investments for the next-generation platform.” Without that, Sony said, profit from its current business would grow at a double-digit rate.
On July 31, reporting April–June results, Sony again named investments for the next-generation platform among the segment’s higher costs. Sony’s fiscal year runs from April 1 to March 31, so the investment covers the period through March 2027. Sony has not said when the console itself goes on sale.
PS6 price
Sony has not announced a price. During the PS5 era, console prices have only gone up. Sony’s recommended US prices:
The April increase was global: the PS5 Pro now costs £789.99 in the UK, €899.99 in Europe and ¥137,980 in Japan. Sony cited “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.” In its annual report filed with the SEC, Sony is more specific: since the second half of its fiscal year ended March 2026, a global surge in demand for memory chips has led to price increases and supply shortages. Sony says it plans to manage the impact on PS5 by adjusting unit sales and promotions, and on July 31 it said it has secured the memory it needs for its projected PS5 sales through March 2027.
Memory costs are a problem for the whole industry. Xbox expects console storage to cost more than five times by the 2027 holiday season what it paid two years earlier, and it has not given a date or price for its own next console, as our Project Helix page explains. Nintendo raised the Switch 2 price to $499.99 on Sept. 1.
What Sony has shown: Project Amethyst with AMD
The closest look at Sony’s future technology is Project Amethyst, its partnership with AMD. On Feb. 27, 2026, Mark Cerny, lead architect of the PS5 and PS5 Pro, announced an upgraded version of PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), the PS5 Pro’s AI upscaler, which analyzes game images pixel by pixel as it raises their resolution. Cerny wrote that the new algorithm and neural network “stem from our Project Amethyst partnership with AMD,” and that PC players have already seen the results in AMD’s FSR 4 upscaling.
Resident Evil Requiem was the first game to use the new PSSR, and a PS5 system update on March 16 brought it to other supported games through an optional PS5 Pro setting. In its annual report, Sony says it plans to push visual fidelity forward through continued investment in AI and machine learning. Sony has not said whether Project Amethyst technology will be in its next console.
The PS5 is not done yet
Sony says 125 million accounts were active on PlayStation in June 2026, a record for the month. The biggest games of the next few months are coming to PS5: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on Oct. 23, GTA 6 on Nov. 19, which carries a PS5 Pro Enhanced label, Until Dawn 2 on Jan. 28, 2027, and Final Fantasy VII Revelation on April 8, 2027. The full list for this fall is in our November 2026 release calendar.
This page is updated as soon as Sony announces a release date, price or new details for its next PlayStation console.
