WoW Talebound explained: three classes, four tales and still no release date
Talebound is a new PvE action RPG mode inside World of Warcraft: Midnight, revealed at BlizzCon on Sept. 12, 2026. It comes with the Echoes of the Worldcore content update, patch 12.1.7, and Blizzard hasn't set a date. We expect December. A free demo with no subscription runs on the Player Test Realm until Nov. 2, according to Blizzard's test notes.

Talebound is the new action RPG mode coming to World of Warcraft: Midnight, and its date is the one big thing Blizzard still hasn’t printed. Here’s what the mode is, what we expect it to cost and when the free demo closes.
What is WoW Talebound?
Blizzard revealed Talebound at BlizzCon on Sept. 12, 2026, and its test notes call it “a new PvE action RPG game mode.” A mysterious Storyteller pulls you into macabre tales, and you run them alone or with friends through themed levels full of enemies, bosses, puzzles, treasure and relics.
Between runs you return to Quillgrave, a lantern-lit village where four providers improve your next attempt. The Arcanist supplies potions and flasks, the Scribe gives talents, the Outfitter raises your starting health and damage, and the Antiquarian adds passive bonuses. Every class can double jump, dodge and guard, so positioning matters as much as your attacks.
When does Talebound come out?
Blizzard hasn’t given a date. Talebound arrives with Echoes of the Worldcore, content update 12.1.7, which went onto the Player Test Realm on Oct. 15. Blizzard’s overview of the update lists it as in testing and names no launch day.

Expected launch: December 2026, our estimate. The update has seven weeks of test time behind it by early December, Blizzard opened the mode to a public demo only at the end of October, and reports from BlizzCon’s roadmap slide put 12.1.7 between autumn and winter. A Dec. 8 date is circulating online, and it’s an outside guess, not Blizzard’s.
How much will Talebound cost?
Expected price: no separate purchase, with an active World of Warcraft subscription at $14.99 a month, our estimate. Plunderstorm in 2024 asked for a subscription or Game Time and no expansion purchase, and the Remix events set the same rule past level 20. Blizzard hasn’t confirmed the rule for Talebound, and it also hasn’t said whether the full mode needs the Midnight expansion.
Rewards run on Bound Silver, a currency for cosmetics. Here are the examples Blizzard has published:
| Reward | Type |
|---|---|
| Witch Hunter’s Shadow Attire | Transmog ensemble |
| Quillgrave Storyteller’s Lectern | Housing decor |
| Quillgrave Talebound Shadowtome | Housing decor |
| Shadowbound Storybook | Mount |
Blizzard says there’s more to earn, for use in Midnight and beyond, and it hasn’t published the costs.
What classes does Talebound have?
Talebound doesn’t use your World of Warcraft classes. It has three of its own, and all three are in the demo.
| Class | Style | Abilities in the demo |
|---|---|---|
| Slayer | Sword and gun, a monster hunter | Slash, Explosive Shot, Minefield, Shrapnel Round, Throwing Knives, Silver Bolt |
| Inquisitor | Holy fire | Purify, Condemn, Denounce, Light’s Wrath, Rapture, Radiant Burst |
| Witch | Lightning, poison, spiders and ravens | Brewing Storm, Bubbling Cauldron, Feline Communion, Winter Spiders, Moonlight Ravens, Thorns |
Blizzard warns that several talents are still in progress, so these lists can change before launch.
Which tales are in Talebound?
Four stories at launch, each with its own settings, enemies and bosses. Blizzard offers each demo tale on three difficulty levels: Normal, Veteran and Heroic.

| Tale | Bosses | In the demo |
|---|---|---|
| Darkhaven | Konrad von Sonnesheim, Alexandre Dozsenc | Yes |
| Greenthistle Wood | Granny Greenthumb, Ylska Vilefang, Mobog | Yes |
| Greywake’s Expedition | Zzyg’th, Chathoa | Yes |
| Grove of the Night Court | Tilywth, Maernok | Launch only |
When does the free Talebound demo end?
Blizzard gives two end dates. Its demo article lists Oct. 30 to Nov. 1, while its 12.1.7 test notes run the demo until Nov. 2 at 10 a.m. PDT, which is noon ET. Blizzard printed PDT even though US clocks changed on Nov. 1, so noon ET is the safer deadline.
The demo sits on the Player Test Realm, a separate test client, and it starts with an introduction called Red Hollow. No subscription is required. Blizzard hasn’t said that demo progress carries over to the live game. If you’re here for WoW Forever, Blizzard’s new home alongside modern and Classic WoW, our WoW Forever release date page covers that launch, which has nothing to do with this mode.
This page is updated as soon as Blizzard sets the Echoes of the Worldcore date or says what the full mode requires.
FAQ
Do I need a subscription to play Talebound?
The demo needs none, and Blizzard says so directly. Blizzard hasn’t given the rule for the full mode. We expect an active World of Warcraft subscription, at $14.99 a month, as with Plunderstorm in 2024.
Is Talebound a separate game?
Talebound is a game mode inside World of Warcraft: Midnight, with its own classes and its own hub village, Quillgrave. Blizzard hasn’t announced a separate version, and it says the rewards you earn are for use in Midnight and beyond.
Which tales are in the Talebound demo?
Three of the four: Darkhaven, Greenthistle Wood and Greywake’s Expedition, after an introduction called Red Hollow. Grove of the Night Court is the launch tale left out of the demo.
