OSRS Hardcore Worlds open Nov. 4 with one life, a separate economy and a choice when you die

Hardcore Worlds, a permanent new game mode for Old School RuneScape, open on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2026, Jagex confirmed in its Oct. 22 news post. Every player starts a brand-new character on separate servers with a separate economy, full trading and the Grand Exchange, at the same pace as the main game and with no XP or drop rate boosts. Each character gets one life. After a death, you choose between resetting the character to a fresh start or transferring it to the main game, minus everything lost on death. The rules follow the strict Hardcore Group Ironman death list, so a death in the Fight Caves, the Inferno or even the Nightmare Zone costs the character its run. Jagex hasn't posted a launch hour. Expected launch time: 6 a.m. ET, 11:00 UTC, our estimate.

Old School RuneScape gets its riskiest mode yet on Nov. 4: one life, a real economy and a choice after a death between a full reset and a move to the main game. Here’s when Hardcore Worlds open, how the death rules work and which activities can end your run.

When do OSRS Hardcore Worlds launch?

Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2026. Jagex revealed the date at the RuneFest 2026 Summit on Oct. 3 and laid out the full rules in a news post on Oct. 22. The studio hasn’t posted a launch hour. Expected launch time: 11:00 UTC, our estimate, the hour Jagex set for The Fractured Archive raid unlock on Oct. 20.

What are Hardcore Worlds?

A separate set of servers where everyone plays a fresh character with one life. You create the character on Tutorial Island, where a small reaper called Death’s Delegate waits near the Magic Instructor’s house and takes you to Death’s Office to accept the challenge. From there, you start outside Lumbridge Castle with the standard starter gear.

These characters aren’t Ironmen. You can trade, use the Grand Exchange and sell to other players, but only inside Hardcore Worlds, which run their own economy. Progress moves at the same rate as the main game, and the worlds are a permanent mode, unlike Leagues or Deadman seasons. Items lost in deaths outside PvP leave the economy for good, so Jagex expects prices to swing hard and gold to feel scarce, closer to 2007 values than to the main game.

What happens when you die on Hardcore Worlds?

A death plays out in two steps. First, the normal rules apply: you keep three items, or four with Protect Item, and Wilderness deaths follow the usual PvP rules. Everything that would go to a gravestone is gone permanently. Then the game makes you choose.

The Continue your journey screen offers Confirm under a gravestone or Transfer character under crossed swords, with a reset count of 0

ChoiceWhat you keepCan you return to Hardcore Worlds?
ResetNothing: quests, stats, items and hiscores start overYes
TransferStats, quests, bank, other storage and protected items, in the main gameNo

Resets are unlimited, and the death screen keeps count. Transfers work because Hardcore Worlds characters use the same save profile as the main game. Player Support won’t restore a lost run for individual deaths, the same policy that covers Hardcore Ironmen.

Which activities are unsafe on Hardcore Worlds?

Hardcore Worlds use the Hardcore Group Ironman death rules, which are stricter than the regular Hardcore Ironman list. Jagex says about 99% of deaths send you straight back to Death’s Office.

Fishing Trawler, the Magic Training Arena, Rogues' Den, the Camelot training room and the Lunar Diplomacy dream world are unsafe as well. Three narrow cases stay safe: the fourth phase of the Koschei the Deathless duel in The Fremennik Trials, the Fight Caves resurrection from the Karamja Elite Diary and the Zulrah resurrection from the Elite Western Provinces Diary. Bounty Hunter and Last Man Standing stay off at launch.

Escape crystals, broadcasts and the new hub

Every Hardcore Worlds character starts with an Escape Crystal, the item that pulls you out of danger, even automatically if you take damage after a set time without input. Jagex plans to cut its price from 75,000 to 10,000 coins in the main game and on Hardcore Worlds, add Death as a seller and let it clear poison and burns on activation.

Major deaths and World Firsts, such as the first Fractured Archive clear, the first Fight Caves completion and the first death, get broadcasts across all Hardcore Worlds. Death’s Office becomes a shared hub on all worlds for the first time, and an engine update toward the end of November adds world switcher filters for the new world type on desktop and mobile. Separately, from Nov. 17, legacy accounts can’t log in until they switch to Jagex Accounts, while Steam, Apple, Google and Game Center logins keep working. For RuneScape’s own fresh-start mode, which Jagex dropped, see our RuneScape Reignited cancellation page, and our November 2026 release calendar has the rest of the month.

This page is updated as soon as Jagex posts the Nov. 4 launch time and the full list of World First broadcasts.

FAQ

How many times can you reset on Hardcore Worlds?

As many times as you like. The death screen counts your resets, and each reset puts the character back at the start, as if fresh off Tutorial Island.

Is the Fight Caves safe on Hardcore Worlds?

The TzHaar Fight Cave is an unsafe death on Hardcore Worlds, along with the Inferno, the Nightmare Zone, Pest Control, Chambers of Xeric and deaths inside a player-owned house. Castle Wars, Clan Wars, Soul Wars and the TzHaar Fight Pit stay safe. The only Fight Caves exception is the resurrection reward from the Karamja Elite Diary.

Do Hardcore Worlds have XP boosts like Leagues?

Hardcore Worlds match the main game’s pace exactly: standard XP rates, standard drop rates and nothing that speeds up progress. Unlike Leagues, they’re permanent.
