Destiny 2 unvaulting: Bungie shares its first step the week of Oct. 26, with a progress bar instead of a roadmap

Bungie plans to share the first step of its Destiny 2 unvaulting process the week of Oct. 26, 2026, according to Josh Deane, Bungie's head of product, who wrote on X on Oct. 19 that the team was "looking at next week to queue up the update." Bungie promised in September to bring all vaulted Destiny 2 content back into the game, including campaigns, destinations and raids, for every player. Instead of a roadmap with dates, Bungie frames the work as a progress bar with development milestones, and release dates come later.

Destiny 2’s vault is opening, and Bungie shares the first step the week of Oct. 26. Here’s what Bungie confirmed, what’s coming back and how the progress bar works.

When is the Destiny 2 unvaulting update? The week of Oct. 26, 2026. On Monday, Oct. 19, Bungie’s head of product Josh Deane answered a fan’s post on X with a short timeline: “Looking at next week to queue up the update.” Deane first set the target on Sept. 25, with a promise to explain the first step of unvaulting before the end of October.

Bungie hasn’t named the exact day.

A progress bar instead of a roadmap. Deane’s Sept. 25 post laid out the format. Rather than a classic roadmap with dates, Bungie plans to show the work as a progress bar: regular updates on development milestones, open talk about the problems the team runs into and proof of the work along the way.

Release dates come at the end of that process. Deane wrote that the team shares a date once players and developers have the same expectations, so the Oct. 26 update describes the first step rather than a launch day.

The same post covered the bigger questions players keep asking: future updates for Destiny 2 and what comes after it for the series. Deane put all of it under one deliberate process and tied Bungie’s plans to celebrate the Destiny legacy to the first release date, so the unvaulting progress bar also sets the pace for news about the franchise beyond Destiny 2.

In September, Bungie promised to return all vaulted content to Destiny 2, including campaigns, destinations and raids, for every player. The job is slow because the game has changed under the hood: lighting, encounters, enemies and core systems all need rework before old content runs in the current game.

The vault holds years of Destiny 2:

  • Beyond LightOn Nov. 10, 2020, removed Io, Titan, Mercury, Mars and the Leviathan, along with the Red War, Curse of Osiris and Warmind campaigns.
  • LightfallOn Feb. 28, 2023, removed the Forsaken campaign and the Tangled Shore.
  • Raids such as Leviathan, Eater of Worlds and Spire of Stars left with their destinations.

Bungie hasn’t announced which campaign, destination or raid returns first.

The unvaulting plan reverses Bungie’s position from June 2026, when the studio called Monuments of Triumph the game’s final content update. Destiny 2 is still running: update 9.7.0.6 arrived on Oct. 20 with a fix for the Eververse store.

The game is free-to-play on Steam, PS5 and Xbox, and about 20,800 players were in it on Steam on the morning of Oct. 22, according to Steam’s public count. For more free games, see our free games this week list.

This page is updated as soon as Bungie posts the unvaulting update and names the first content to return.
