Switch 2 Lite release date: not announced, and the "OSM" code was a battery change

Nintendo hasn't announced a Switch 2 Lite or any smaller, cheaper or handheld-only Switch 2, and it hasn't said one is coming. Its US store lists the Switch 2 at $499.99 and the original Switch Lite at $229.99, with no Switch 2 Lite. The "OSM" product code that set off Lite talk in January turned out to mark a European Switch 2 with a user-replaceable battery, which Nintendo lists for October 2026. The next new Switch 2 Nintendo will sell in the US is the Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition, a themed version out on Oct. 29 at $519.99.

Nintendo hasn’t announced a Switch 2 Lite. The “OSM” code that fans tied to a Lite marks a European Switch 2 with a user-replaceable battery instead. On Nintendo’s US store, the Switch 2 costs $499.99 and the original Switch Lite $229.99.

Is there a Switch 2 Lite?

Not officially. Nintendo hasn’t announced a smaller, cheaper or handheld-only Switch 2, and its US store doesn’t list one. Nintendo’s 2026 results briefings were about memory costs and the Switch 2 price, and none of the 19 questions answered at its June 26 shareholders meeting was about a new model.

The original Switch Lite, a handheld-only Switch that can’t connect to a TV, came out on Sept. 20, 2019, at $199.99, about two and a half years after the Switch. The same gap after the Switch 2’s June 5, 2025, launch would land in late 2027, but Nintendo hasn’t said it plans a Lite at all.

What the “OSM” code really means

In January 2026, a fan found an unused product code, “OSM”, on the console page of Nintendo’s account website, and it returned an image of a Switch 2. It didn’t follow the pattern of Nintendo’s console codes, HAC for the Switch, HDH for the Switch Lite and BEE for the Switch 2, so it set off talk of a new model, including a Lite.

Nintendo Europe explained it in June: future versions of its BEE products that comply with new EU rules get new model numbers and the extra code “OSM” on the box, marking them as separate products for regulatory purposes. On the Switch 2, that’s model BEE-001(-01), the version with a user-replaceable battery.

The new Switch 2 in Europe: a replaceable battery

Nintendo is replacing the Switch 2 in Europe with BEE-001(-01) ahead of EU battery rules that take effect in mid-February 2027. Its support page lists October 2026 as the earliest date in its European store and says timing at retailers may vary. “There is no difference in functionality,” Nintendo says.

The new model covers the EU, the UK, Norway, Switzerland, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Oman and the UAE. Not every new Switch 2 there will have it right away: on Sept. 16, Nintendo said the consoles in its European Switch Sports Resort bundle (Oct. 22), Mario Kart World bundle (Oct. 29) and the Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition (Oct. 29) won’t have a user-replaceable battery. On Oct. 13, it posted a battery replacement guide that says there are now two Switch 2 models.

The Switch, Switch Lite and Switch OLED aren’t getting the change. Nintendo will stop selling them to European retailers from mid-February 2027.

In the US, the FCC certified the console on Oct. 8, 2026, along with revised Joy-Con 2, Pro Controller and GameCube controller models. Nintendo hasn’t announced the replaceable-battery Switch 2 for the US.

Reports of a Switch 2 OLED

Nintendo hasn’t confirmed a July 2026 report from a Korean tech newspaper that it is weighing a Switch 2 with a 1080p OLED screen. The paper said no decision had been made, partly because OLED panels cost more than LCD, and estimated that if Nintendo goes ahead, mass production could start in late 2027 at the earliest. The current Switch 2 has a 7.9-inch LCD.

Switch 2 vs. Switch Lite: specs and price

The original Switch Lite is the closest thing to a Lite that Nintendo sells today. It costs $270 less than the Switch 2, but it has a smaller 720p screen, can’t connect to a TV and can’t play Switch 2 games.

What Nintendo sells now and what’s next

Nintendo raised the US Switch 2 price from $449.99 to $499.99 on Sept. 1, 2026, citing changes in market conditions. Its next new Switch 2 in the US is the Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition, with a Zelda design and green and gold Joy-Con 2, out on Oct. 29 at $519.99, game not included.

Nintendo’s next scheduled update is its six-month results on Nov. 5, 2026. For every Switch 2 price and bundle, see our page on the Switch 2 price, and for Nintendo’s next showcase, our page on the next Nintendo Direct.
